Spring progress

It's so beautiful outside these days. This time of year is truly a feast for the eyes when you live in South Carolina and if you take the time to notice. All of nature has erupted in gentle pastel colors. Pink sunrises, white drifts of barely-open dogwood blossoms, the first heavenly scented purple wisteria flowers opening (if pale purple had a smell, it would be of wisteria), yellow Carolina jessamine growing wild in the woods and along fences, red and pink and green buds in the trees. Speaking of green, there are thousands of shades of it this time of year. On our early morning walks with George these days I like to be quiet, soaking in the beauty and peace of it all. I would defy anyone to find a more beautiful place on earth than the Carolinas in early spring. It's my favorite season.

Here are some pictures I took of some of my gardening projects. As you can see, there's been progress.

The fig tree has new leaves!

So does the pomegranate!

My little potted ornamental pomegranate has new leaves, too.

And my miniature rosebush has the first flower of the year.

This is the oregano that I was just sure I'd killed last summer. I forgot to water it until it seemed totally dead, but I watered the dirt and dry sticks through the winter and it has re-sprouted. Yay!

Then onto the house plants.....my "Christmas cactus" is more like an Easter cactus!

The biggest orchid is still blooming, and in fact, there's a new flower spike shooting off the main one.

I hope you're all enjoying the signs of spring, no matter where you are! Have a great weekend, everyone!

  2. I would say you're at least two weeks ahead of us here. Our Figs are only just showing their leaves, and the Pomegranates are even slower. We have a good week of warm sunshine ahead, so everything should now leap ahead.

  3. Everything looks just beautiful and your little fig tree is really showing new growth! We still have a lot of browns here and no flowers at all yet. But there are some buds on the trees, so soon we'll have more green!

  6. I usually read your posts but comment seldom but thank you for sharing your very cheering pictures of spring. I am confined to quarters with health problems so it's great to be reminded that out in the big wide world there are signs of life everywhere.

Here blooming now are the daffodils, tulips and hyacinth. We have four star magnolia on the brink of blooming. Already pretty...but once they open...in a week...their done. Happens to quick.

  8. Oregano is quite a hardy plant and can survive most conditions. I would love to have a pomegranate tree.

  9. It was very much spring here yesterday - but today the sea brings with it all four seasons - rainbows and roofs that rattle... But soon the thrift and orchids will be out on the coast path and more butterflies too - I was writing about those the other day. Spring is always a joy.

  10. Figs and pomegranates! Wow! I'd love to grow a pomegranate! I have multiple bulb plants but so far only the daffodils have bloomed. Both my peach and nectarine trees have buds. Spring truly is great! You, luckily, have the temps we still are missing!

  11. Those of us who get pleasure from the small signs of Spring that Nature gives us, wherever we live, are very lucky. In these dreary times it can be such a relief. Are you sure your cactus is not an Easter cactus - there is one that flowers at Easter.

  12. forsythia is blooming at our neighbor's house. I can see tiny pink buds on our cherry tree. and our mountain laurel (our state flower) is full of white blossoms. the daffs & hyacinths are pushing their way up thru the mud. and the snow pile from february is FINALLY gone!

  14. I love your cactus! I think there IS such a thing as an Easter cactus, so apparently that's what it is. Now that the fig tree has taken root and generated new leaves, there'll be no stopping it!
