Well, our big winter storm only resulted in a small glaze of ice on Sunday, and then it rained late that night and melted it away. We were lucky and didn't have any problems. Now there's a chance of snow this weekend, and in the meantime it's very, very cold. This morning when I left for work it was 16°F. And it's supposed to be cold like this for the next 10 days. Winter is back!
One of my Christmas gifts was an Ancestry DNA kit. I sent off my sample last month and I just got the results back this weekend. Here's what I learned:
There were no real surprises except possibly the 6% from Denmark.

Interesting! I guess the Denmark connection is very closely connected to your Northwestern German ancestry. Apparently no Yorkshire blood in your veins, though, as I imagine Neil is going to point out :-)
Anyway, I'm glad you didn't suffer any power outtages or other problems related with the icy storm. I don't know what 16F is in Celsius and am too lazy to look it up, but I hope you'll be keeping warm and cooking lots of nice crock pot meals and soups - winter's comfort food!
Stay warm and cozy and safe, Jennifer!
What a fascinating mix. (And what a fun gift.)
-8 Celsius!
I thought my dad's side was 100% german and very surprised with a strong Scandinavia showing. I attended a class that explained all this with European History lessons. My dad's mom's side is Mennonite and they were driven away from Scandinavia where they were shunned, ostracized and persecuted for their religious beliefs starting in the 1500's. They migrated to Germany which wasn't much better. My ancestors moved to Pennsylvania and then Ohio. I am not sure I ever studied European history.
Those Ancestry kits are fascinating, aren't they? Even when there are no surprises, it's fun to see where you're "from" and in what percentages.
Now I want to get an ancestry kit myself!
My brother started doing that and started discovering long lost relatives all over the world. Have fun!! Oh, and we got 10m inches, and Howie, it turns out, is not a snow dog.
VIKINGS!
DNA is fun and fascinating, as long as you're not one of the people who finds out you're not related to one of your parents. That's a shocker for some folks. It's cold in Florida, too.
Love,
Janie
Will do, thanks!
I'd been wanting one for a while. I'm hoping to find some Polish relatives from my dad's side since I'm now being linked up to cousins from all over.
That's so interesting! I love that about researching family history; it's a great way to learn about history, often history of places you never gave much thought to before.
I didn't really expect the Slovak, but after some thought it makes sense. My great grandfather was supposed to have come from a town in Poland very close to the (then) Czechoslovakia border. Poor Poland's borders have changed so much over the centuries.
Do it!! They break down the percentages by maternal and paternal amounts, which is interesting, and they also list dozens of traits that you likely inherited based on your DNA. Probably 80% of mine were accurate! It's fun.
I'm getting notifications of cousins from all over. Howie!! Good for him. He knows staying warm and dry is where it's at!
Right!?! I said that too!
Also, DNA is no fun for criminals whose relatives take them and get them caught! I'm thinking of the Golden State Killer who murdered all those women in the 70s and 80s and got away with it for decades...until a distant cousin got their DNA done. I love that!
I wonder if I'll ever do get my DNA analyzed. Part of me is quite curious and part of me is just...meh. I am what I am.
It's disappointing to learn that there's apparently no Yorkshire in you Jennifer but I will still keep communicating with you as I am not racist. In Britain we always think of lower temperatures in celsius so I had to look up what 16 degrees F is. Brrrrr!
Your results were very interesting. We did ours a few years ago.
I understand that. But it is fun to know, and I was surprised how many of the 90-some odd traits I was likely to have were true (aversion to cilantro, flat feet, fine hair, etc).
Sorry Mr. Pudding! I know you consider Yorkshire the best part of England. :) As for the temperature, I always have to look up Celsius. Always.
Any surprises? Anything of especial interest?
