Oh, the pain

I hope that everyone who celebrates had a nice Easter. In our house, it's like most other holidays, an excuse for a good meal and dessert. I nailed the good meal part (ham, rice, fresh asparagus, buttermilk biscuits) but the dessert was an utter failure. It was my first attempt at pound cake, and very discouraging. I don't know if I got a bad recipe, or if the cheap butter I used was an issue, or if I simply did something wrong, but all that work and it went right in the trash. The cakes (I used two loaf pans and had doubled the batter) were greasy, heavy, and, oddly, had turned a dark color on the inside with an unpleasant, almost nutty flavor. Trust me, they were gross...and after all that work!

(Any bakers out there who might know what happened?)

Another thing about making the doomed cakes (as well as all the other cooking I did) was what it's done to my back. For some reason when I spend long periods of time standing at my kitchen counters and sink, my back will sometimes hurt like hell afterwards. *  Earlier in the day I'd spent a few hours working in the garden, then I came in and stood working in the kitchen for about 5 more hours. By bedtime my back was already getting stiff and sore, and when I got up yesterday morning it was worse. Last night I merely coughed one time, and my back went into such painful spasms that it made me gasp out loud. I'm lucky to have refills on muscle relaxers, and since I'm off it doesn't matter that they make me tired. I'm hoping it resolves before the rest of my time off is gone, though!

*I got a bad pulled muscle at work years ago, and my back hasn't been the same since.

I can't even imagine what caused your pound cakes to come out like that.
I surely hope your back starts to behave itself. Standing can indeed cause pain.

I'm so sorry you are in pain with your back. I know if I stand in my kitchen too long (making holiday dinners or baking, ahem) my back is killing me. Spasms are the worst. I hope you are feeling better.
I bought a lemon pound cake mix at Walmart and it was delicious. Everyone raved over it. I am pretty sure it is the same mix my daughter bought and her cake was misshapen and weird. I have no advice. What a disappointment though.

It sounds to like it was more of an egg issue than a butter issue; the yolks give it the color and help with the texture.

A recipe for disaster. I love it! But sorry about the disaster and, especially, about your back.

I've never made a pound cake so have no advice to offer on this. Too bad it was a wasted effort!

No baking advice - I just use a mix. Sorry to hear about your back and hope you feel better soon, Jennifer.

Disappointing about the cake. I'm not sure what happened, unless your oven heated unevenly. I'd have given it to the squirrels. They're not fussy.

Back pain is horrible. It affects everything, even something as simple as walking. You have my sympathy.

A recipe for disaster! Ha. I am a (*ahem*) creative cook. I tend to wing it when making disaster. My disasters always turn out just perfectly no matter what I toss in the pot!

Good luck with the back issues. I have been having them myself. I have been to my doctor, been to PT, and nothing has worked. I did get my doctor to have me get x-rays of my back, and I have some issues with my spine. I am going to a spine specialist in a couple of weeks. Never a dull moment. Sorry about the pound cake. That has happened to me too, where I have made a dessert, which took hours, and then it turned out like crap. I know the feeling!

To my knowledge I've never made a pound cake. Lots of eggs in it? Perhaps the recipe wanted a certain size egg? Hope your back improves quickly!

Can't help with the cake (I don't even know what a pound cake is), but I hope that your back is much better by the time you are reading this. From personal eperience I know how crippling back pain can be.

That is very strange about the pound cake. I'm not a baker so I haven't a clue what happened. And I'm sorry about your back! I wonder if you could get a stool or something with back support that you could sit on while working in the kitchen? It sounds like you may have just overdone it, between the gardening and the cooking.

Tell Gregg to don his loin cloth, grab a bottle of aromatic oil and knead your back like an expert masseur. He may need to watch some YouTube massage videos beforehand.
