It's official! I went to court this morning and was sworn in as a Guardian ad Litem.
I've also been assigned my first case, a 17 year old girl in foster care. I plan to try to meet her and her foster mother this weekend. I'm terribly nervous, but I'm looking forward to it, too. Wish me luck (I'm going to need it!)
Woo hoo! Good luck, though I'm sure you're going to be far more capable at this than your nerves are now telling you. :)
ReplyDeleteI hope so, Steve. I didn't expect a child that's almost an adult and needs help transitioning out of foster care.
DeleteIt seems like a very responsible " job"...... someone has to do it ,and having read you for a while now, I am sure that you will be excellent. Good luck . x
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteYou go girl, or shall I say "you go GAL." Your first girl, age 17. I hear they age out of foster care at age 18 which can be tough so you will be a great advocate for her.
ReplyDeleteThis girl will age out next summer. She has had a lot of trauma in her life. The most important thing is to help her make a plan for what comes next.
DeleteThank goodness that there are people to help after foster care, well done to you
ReplyDeleteWay to go!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your new guardianship gig, and best of luck with her. Teenagers are tough, especially one that's been through a lot of traumatic experiences, but you are a very sweet person and I know you'll be a positive presence in her life. :-)
ReplyDeleteFantastic! You are now doing god's work for sure. I mean that, too.
ReplyDeleteI've heard quite a bit about transitioning out of foster care. The foster care system pretty much just dumps teenagers when they turn 18. It's great that you're stepping in to help.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
Nervousness means you truly care about the outcome. You are the best person for this job.
ReplyDeleteLike I said in my previous comment, she will be at least as nervous as you, I imagine. And don't be discouraged if she turns out to be a typically sulky teenager (at first) who gives the impression she wants to be anywhere else but where she is right now.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations. Good luck. You'll be great!
ReplyDeleteShe will probably be bolshie and sulkie at the same time when you meet with foster mother first time. Then she will see how far she can go with you when you are alone together next time. You get chucked in at the deep end, no observing with another to help you in at first. Amazing. We do it here but with trained full time individuals who do it as a job, rather than voluntary. I think you should be paid to do this work.
ReplyDeleteYou are the best person for this job.

This might appear to be quite a challenge for you but I'm sure you will be able to deal with what ever comes along.
