A lovely day

Our niece's wedding on Saturday was simply beautiful. I've only ever attended a handful of weddings in my life, and I never considered myself the kind of person who would get emotional at them, but I surprised myself and my husband by brimming with tears over and over again. The first time was when we arrived at the venue, and I went into the dressing rooms with my sister in law to speak to the bride a few minutes before the ceremony. She looked so beautiful that the tears started right then and there:

This picture wasn't quite as in focus as I would have liked, but it's one of the few
I got before the ceremony. Isn't that a gorgeous wedding dress?

Examining Roxie's gift.
The couple had insisted that their little dog, Roxie, was going to be a part of the wedding. They had a tiny little veil that attached to her collar and a box that she was to carry in her mouth that contained the wedding rings. She sat in the front row with the bride's family, with the mother of the bride holding her leash. We had heard about this plan last week, and the manager and staff of the pet store where uncle Gregg works were delighted when he told them about it....and so they assembled a huge bag of expensive treats and toys for the "bridesmutt"! I made up a pretty gift basket....for the dog....complete with a tiny pink toy tiara I found at the dollar store. (The bride and groom had requested "no gifts" for themselves, but I knew that they'd be thrilled that we had a present for Roxie!) After I snapped that photo of Melissa looking at the basket, she gave Roxie one of the toys, and Roxie ran over to an upholstered settee, jumped up on it with her prize, and proceeded to shake and chew it. It made the bride and the girls in the wedding party laugh.

I didn't take any pictures during the actual ceremony, of course. It was held outdoors by a small pond in front of a simple woven wood arch decorated with small bundles of pretty wildflowers.

There were humorous moments, like when the nervous groom was asked, "Will you take Melissa to be your wife..." and he jumped the gun and said "I will!" before the officiant paused, smiled, and then continued "..........to love and to cherish her...." and all of the assembled guests laughed. Jay blushed adorably and laughed, too. It was so sweet. At least twice during the short ceremony I was helpless to stop the tears, and Gregg was surprised. He hadn't thought to bring a hankie, but when he noticed the tears rolling he smiled at me and gently squeezed my hand. I had to laugh at myself a little. When did I become such a softie?!

I thought Melissa's hair looked lovely. I love the flowers tucked in at the back. This photo also shows off the back of her gown.

I can't believe that the tiny 3 year old girl with big eyes that I met when I first started seeing her uncle 20 years ago has grown up into a beautiful woman (beautiful on the inside as well as the outside) and is now a married woman. Where has the time gone? I hope that they will be happy, and that their marriage will be a long and a good one. It's clear to see that Jay is utterly besotted with and devoted to Melissa, and she's lit with happiness when she looks at him. May it always be so!

    1. The strolling photos were the suggestion of the photographer, and she was standing ahead of me, off to the right, snapping pictures when I snagged a few pictures of my own. :)

  3. What a beautiful bride in a beautiful dress. I hope you were pleased with your own dress and shoes. Which shoes did you decide to wear? I love it that the dog participated and received gifts. Franklin and Penelope would be much too frightened to be involved in a wedding. I haven't been to a lot of weddings. I don't do well with groups of people or with relatives. I went to a niece's wedding many years ago. I didn't cry because I was too pissed off at the groom. He and his friends were assholes--pardon my language, please, but they really were. During the reception they were "dancing," which turned into them slamming into each other. Fortunately, the DJ changed the music to something less slammable. When he danced with his bride, he licked her face. He and his friends disappeared for a while to smoke something or use something. At the end of the night, I told him, "If you hurt her, I will kill you." They got divorced after a baby and a year or two of marriage. I didn't know about the divorce till it was over. I'm sure he hurt her, but being the wimp I am, I didn't seek him out to murder him. Besides, I wouldn't do well in prison. All the other girls would pick on me. I'm so glad the wedding was a sweetly emotional experience for you.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Ouch. Your niece's wedding sounds like a nightmare, and it sounds as if it was obvious even then that the marriage would never work. And yeah, prison is best avoided!

I planned to wear the white shoes, but took both pairs just in case, and when I put them on all of a sudden it was obvious that the shade of white didn't match at all...and didn't look good. The brown sandals actually looked much better with it than the pictures on my last post would indicate.

    2. I'm so glad you had the brown sandals. It was wise to have two possibilities. A few months before the niece got married her older brother told my son that he wished she wouldn't marry him and he had already cheated on her.

  4. You're right, she does look very beautiful. However, the one who really grabbed my attention was the gorgeous Roxie, who looks very much like my late Bok.

The bride and groom are beautiful and look very much in love, and the dress is gorgeous! I am glad you went there and enjoyed it, even though it meant a lot of time and money involved.

    1. It meant so much to Gregg's sister to have us there, and to our niece as well. We were very close to Melissa when she was growing up. She's grown into a very good young woman that we can respect and we're proud of her. I'm so glad we went. :)

    1. They had a wonderful professional photographer that set those unposed photos up after the more traditional ones were out of the way. I thought it was a great idea!

  7. Good photos. Lovely dress. Cute dog. But where is the photo of you and Gregg? Which dress and shoes did you wear in the end? Glad that you had a lovely time. The weather looks good too!

    1. I wore the cream and floral dress and the brown sandals. I took photos of Gregg with his sister (the bride's mother) and brother, but never thought to have someone take one with me in it until later when it was too late!

  8. The dress was elegant and simple. It suited her perfectly. The only thing missing from this blogpost is a nice picture of Uncle Gregg and The Human Waterfall!

    1. I got a couple of pictures of uncle Gregg--see my reply to Frances--but no one got any photos that included me. When we got back to our hotel room that night I realized that the blog would ask to see my dress, so I snapped a photo of me in the full length mirror in our room. Unfortunately, I was a little drunk on champagne and the lighting was poor, and the next morning when I looked at the picture it was a blurry mess! So sorry, no photos of me.

    1. I agree about simple being elegant...and the style of dress she chose suited her perfectly. :)

Melissa and Jay dote on that little dog. They've already called home a couple of times from San Francisco where they're honeymooning to check on their "baby".

    1. You're right about Jay looking like he could be on The Vikings! I also thought he looks a little like the actor who plays Tormund from Game of Thrones--especially in some of their more casual engagement photos when his wild red hair wasn't so careful smoothed down! :)
