A low-key birthday weekend

Yesterday was Gregg's birthday, and to my surprise he took the day off work. He almost never does that, but the manager of the pet store found out it was his birthday and told him he should--so he did. I was so glad. He never gets much time off. We spent the day at home, which is what he wanted to do. I grilled a couple of nice bacon wrapped steaks with onions and mushrooms for our dinner. Since we had leftover apple pie last night, I waited until today to bake his birthday cake. It's pineapple-upside down.

I'm also baking some chocolate chip pumpkin muffins since the oven is hot. Those will be for snacks this week.

The painting I'm having framed for him won't be ready for almost three weeks! I didn't realize it would take so long, but he's happy to wait. We're both pretty excited about it.

I couldn't figure out how to rotate the photo so you'll have to look at it sideways to get a better idea of it. I think the mat and frame I chose for it will look good....I hope so.

I was disappointed in our families yesterday. No one called or texted Gregg for his birthday. No one on either side makes much of an effort, as much as it pains me to say so. Oh well. We have each other, right? I love that man to bits, and I told him so several times.

my spouse's brother has not called my guy since the hip replacement surgery on 10/2. my BIL is a MAGAt and a useless POS. it's not just limited to your family, sadly.

    1. Oooh, yes, unfortunately my family support Dump and I can barely stand to think of it. We're a lot less close because of it, and even though it makes me sad it's got to be that way. :/

  2. You can make my pineapple upside down cake any day! What a beauty. And the same for the painting. It's beautiful. Happy birthday to your Gregg.

  4. Happy birthday, Gregg! As to family who can't even be bothered- it's so easy to say "let them go" but it still hurts.
But I'm sure he knows how much you love him and I'm sure that you are his life as well as his wife. And that's what's important. The cake looks absolutely sinfully delicious.

    1. Well, it turned out that his sister tried to call on his birthday and he missed the call and didn't know. They had a good chat the next day, so that was nice. I was happy for him.

    1. He works too much, but it seems to be wired into him and I can't make him stop. I'm glad when he takes a little time for himself.

  8. What a beautiful picture! Those koi will look great, no matter where you will choose to put them on the wall.
It saddens me to read about your family situation. Sometimes I have rebellious thoughts about NOT wanting to see my folks (especially after a very busy working day or week), but in the end I love them to bits and would never forgive myself if I did not make the most of the years we will hopefully still have them around.
Belated Happy Birthday wishes to Gregg! Your steaks, cake and muffins sound yummy.

    1. I envy people with close families, even though I know that it can be annoying sometimes. Our families aren't bad people, we're just not really close with most of them. It's a shame, but such is life.

  10. Wish Gregg a happy birthday from Spain. I love him just because of how you speak of him. The steak sounds SO good and oh that cake is a work of art. So lucky! And speaking of art, I love the painting. Looking forward to seeing it framed. Be grateful for each other and for th lives you’ve created. My extended family was the same way; it hurt I’m sure but I was so used to it that I think it hurt Jerry more than it did me.

    1. That's how I feel....more hurt for Gregg than for myself. As far as my family goes, I'm used to having conflicting feelings and not always the relationship I would like to have with them. Thank you Mitchell.

    1. It's a super easy recipe. It would take a pillar candle to fit in that hole!!!

    1. I'll be sure and post photos of it once I get it back. I think a matte and frame will make a large difference.
