Sunday this & that

As I get older, I find myself becoming less and less tolerant of heat. Today was 90 degrees (32C) and miserably humid. And it's only mid-May. I have a feeling this summer is going to be awful, and I was hoping for a little more time before the worst of it started. Sigh. This morning I went out around 9am to water the garden and half an hour later I could have wrung sweat out of my clothes. I came in and showered and stayed inside after that. I just can't stand it!

Which is unfortunate, because today was Carsen's 8th birthday party, and it was taking place at a local park. I bought her some books and a craft kit as a gift from me and Gregg and dropped it off at Marla's house prior to the party. Marla was disappointed that today had turned out to be so hot and humid. This time of year is always iffy as far as outdoor comfort level goes, but kids don't mind and I'm sure they had fun.

I ran down to Barnes and Noble to get Carsen's birthday gifts. Yes, I'm a last-minute auntie this year! The pet treat cutters/molds/recipes kit is a nod to the fact that Carsen has two new puppies this year, Boston Terriers the family dog gave birth to back at Christmastime. She loves her three dogs and will enjoy making homemade biscuits for them. I hope she likes the books, too.

After dropping off the birthday gift, I came home and took a nap in the a/c. I felt guilty about this, because Gregg's been working on painting the outside trim on the house all day long. I would love to help him, but again, can't take the heat. I'm cooking him a nice supper to make up for it!

Speaking of a nice supper, the oven part of our gas range isn't heating. I'm sure it's a faulty igniter or something, but neither of us is handy with that kind of thing so I guess I'm going to have to find a repair person next week. I really can't be without an oven for too long! Because I knew it would be an issue this week, yesterday we fired up the grill and cooked a bunch of marinated chicken breasts and sirloin tips, which I'll make into dinners and lunches for the next several days. I also cooked corn on the cob and sweet onions wrapped in foil on the grill. I picked up the corn along with fresh tomatoes and a small watermelon from the farm stand, and tonight I'm making a pasta salad to go with grilled chicken. Tomorrow night will be teriyaki beef and stir-fried veggies with rice. Leftovers from both nights will make good work lunches, too, along with fresh salads. I can't wait until we're harvesting tomatoes and peppers and cucumbers and squash from our own garden, but the farm stand will do in the meantime.

A good Sunday night to everyone! Thanks for stopping by.

  1. curious! As I age I get more intolerant to cold! I think to move to the midwest but now I find temp below 30C chilly.

    1. I'm an overweight middle aged woman in perimenopause...so it's not really that curious. :/

  2. I always say I look better with more clothes on than when I take them off, lol. I agree on the heat - and the HUMIDITY. It's miserable.

    1. The humidity is the WORST. I can't stand getting drenched in sweat just from walking outside.

  3. The gifts looked very nice, and I'm sorry about your stove and middle age things but I loved reading about the food on your grill! Jennifer try to include more pics next time πŸ˜‹πŸ˜‰

    1. I loved the Ramona books when I was her age, and I read that kids still like them. I also read that Ivy and Bean is a popular series these days, although I haven't read those. After my time!

  5. I'm sure the festive gifts were welcomed!

I can't complain about our spring season so far. We go from winter to a week of spring and then hot as hel summer temps generally, but this year has been glorious weather, and we are even enjoying a nice spring. Could use a bit more rain though.

    1. Same here as far as rain. In fact, we're in a severe drought.

  6. This is why we built our pool. When it's too hot to do anything else, we throw ourselves in the water. Then back indoors again!

  7. I'd send you plenty of the chilly weather we're having right now if I could, Jennifer! Like you (and you know I'm older than you by some years), I can not tolerate heat as well as I used to, but I guess it'll be some time until we'll get temperatures in the 30s here.
Your food sounds wonderful, as it always does!
I love the gifts you've put together for Carsen. It's a great idea to get her something that will involve her dogs, too.

  8. Another great set of gifts. You’ve got the touch. Our temps are supposed to climb to the high 90s later this week. If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the ... outdoor jobs.

    1. Hee hee! I can't stand the heat so I'll stay inside. :) The heat doesn't bother Gregg. Not like me, anyway.

  9. Jennifer, I feel your pain concerning the heat. I don't do well in hot and humid, and that type of weather is approaching quickly.

  10. As I age I find it's the cold that bothers me. Yesterday was in the high 80s and comfortable. I'm hoping this means I won't be undone by the summer. Tomorrow is high 90s though, so I won't be venturing out after early morning.

  11. Yes, I suppose Don Henley was right when he sang, "The heat is on!"

  12. I don't envy you the heat. Staying out of it is the best thing to do, as far as that's feasible.

  13. You're right about becoming less and less tolerate as you age. You think it's awful now, just wait until you get to be my age in hot weather, LOL. But I do love the sun and sunshine, just not the heat that goes along with it.

  14. Same with me and Glen and the heat. And you're right- the blast furnace heat is not even yet upon us.

  15. It's even been warm up here in Illinois but I am looking forward to cooler weather in a couple of days. I've missed a few of your posts so had to catch up this morning. Those books look so cute and I might get that pet treat book for my daughter as her dog turns 4 this week. She makes the food for her dogs and so she would like that.

  16. Sorry about the heat! What a drag! It's hard for me to conceive of, considering it's 45ΒΊ F outside at night here. We're supposed to warm up soon, though. Ramona is a great choice for Carsen! Beverly Cleary rules!

  17. I feel for you! Heat is hard for me, being a lifelong Washingtonian but humidity is the worst. What lovely gifts! I bought my grandson a couple of books for his birthday. Hope he likes them. He's really into Wild Kratz. (sp?)

  18. Living at this more northerly latitude, people cannot get enough of summer heat when it comes but I recall when I lived in Thailand that being outside could be pretty awful and reaching an air conditioned, chilled destination was such a huge relief. This is going to be one long, hot summer for you Jennifer if the heat is already becoming unbearable in mid-May.
