Gregg is continuing to heal, and while he despises the "immediate" dentures (just as he was warned he would), things are better by the day. Food is still something of an issue, but that's getting better too. He's moved on from mashed potatoes, applesauce, and yogurt to things like soft scrambled eggs and bites of grilled cheese sandwich dipped in soup. He's still taking an antibiotic but has almost quit taking pain medication entirely. (Thanks to everyone for all the encouragement and good wishes, by the way).
I'm feeling a bit stir crazy at the moment. I hate to admit it but I'm sick of hanging around the house day after day, only leaving for work or necessary errands, and trying to help keep things cheerful for a man who's in pain and having a rough go of things. I'm used to periods like this in our marriage, and I know that he'd be right there for me if our situation was reversed, but I could still really use a break. I feel guilty about that, but it's the truth.
One way I've passed some of this boring time is helping my friend Karen write postcards to Texas voters. She's been hosting weekly postcard writing parties at her house this month and several of our book club friends attend. I haven't made it to any of her Sunday afternoon gatherings, but I did go over the night before Gregg's dental procedure (he was working late) and helped write some. I also brought home 50 names on the Texas Democratic voter rolls and some blank postcards to write. It always feels good to know that I'm helping get out the vote. It's my small way of contributing to the cause. During the 2024 election I personally hand wrote and mailed about 600 postcards to swing states.
For those of you who may be wondering, Postcards to Swing States (and other political postcard writing campaigns) are not trying to change anyone's mind about who to vote for. They're meant to encourage folks who usually show up to vote for the Democratic primaries to vote, period. Preference is given to people who didn't vote in the last election. When and if you vote is public record; how you vote is not, of course. So we're not trying to sway MAGA, we're encouraging and reminding registered voters (that probably lean Democratic) to vote.
God, how I hope James Talarico wins in Texas.
That's most of the news from my house. I'm sorry I haven't been more present on others' blogs lately! Things have been simultaneously boring and busy, if that makes any sense.

Sometimes being busy is the most boring thing there is. Just depends on how tedious your business is.
ReplyDeleteAnd you have every right to be tired. I would be too. Hang in there.
Thanks Mary. I will.
DeleteTotally understand that! Take that break and don't allow yourself to feel guilty! Glad Gregg is doing better.
ReplyDeleteHe's doing better overall, but yesterday out of the blue he FAINTED. We have no idea what happened. So now I'm pretty worried about that, too.
DeleteI get the boring and busy!!
ReplyDeleteI'm also over this weather and cannot wait until this week when the change comes!!
Good news about Gregg. I imagine he'll be happier when all this is done.
He's going to be so happy when this is all over. It's been a real ordeal.
DeleteThinking of you and Gregg. Wish I could help!
ReplyDeleteYou help a lot just by being my friend! xx
DeleteThere are a lot of ;things you can soak toasted bread in, salsa for one, so go wiled!!!
ReplyDeleteGo wild! Haha! :)
DeleteYou're going through a lot. Those of us who have been tied down by caregiving for a beloved partner absolutely get the feeling of boredom as well as fear and guilt! You're doing fine. This is all how it goes, even when you give your best daily.
ReplyDeleteOften all the attention is on the sick partner and very few medical people understand the exhaustion and needs of the well partner. Often they're seen as indefatigable, when they're just hanging in. Go you! We've got your back.
Thank you for the encouragement and kind comment. I appreciate it so much!
DeleteMr. T is on The Tube of Yous - constantly - asking for money. He conveys being desperate.
ReplyDeleteOf course our entire country is in a desperate situation. Turning Texas blue would be a major win that we need.
DeleteBest wishes to both you and Gregg! And of course to my beloved Marco.
ReplyDeleteMarco just turned 19 years old last week! I meant to blog about it!
DeleteJames has GOT tp win or i am quitting humanity altogether. Thank you for participating!
ReplyDeleteI'm really hoping for Talarico in Texas, Ossoff in Georgia, and Cooper in North Carolina. We need to win the Senate and to get a big majority in the House if we're going to fix any of this awful mess!
DeleteAgain, best wishes to Gregg. Time is the only healer.
ReplyDeleteThat's true. Thank you Cro.
DeleteGood to know Gregg feels a bit better. I understand busy but boring. Raising my kids could be like that, especially when they were sick. How do you get the names and postcards? Writing postcards before the mid-terms is something I can do.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
You can go online to somewhere like this: https://turnoutpac.org/postcards/ and they will hook you up!
DeleteIt's completely understandable to want a break after weeks of looking after Gregg, and there's no need to feel guilty about it. I'm glad his food is improving and that the healing is going well. Thank you for sharing an honest update, Jennifer, and I hope the cooler weather brings you some fresh air and rest!
ReplyDeleteLater this week highs are only going to be in the low 70s with lows in the 50s! I can't wait.
DeleteBoring and busy at the same time makes perfect sense. It was my Mum's life for the last four years of my Dad's life. She didn't work anymore, of course (being in her late 70s herself), and leaving the house only happened if she had a "Daddy-sitter" (my sister or me) and when she really, really, REALLY wanted to attend an event that mattered to her, such as her best friend's birthday or something like that. She did almost all shopping online so didn't even leave the house for that. Doctor's appointments for my Dad were the only other interruption of the daily combination of tedium and mental stress. I can't even begin to imagine what it was really like.
ReplyDeleteAll the more I am glad to read that things are better for Gregg little by little, and so far everything seems to go according to what you were to expect.
You are only human, Jennifer - it speaks for you that you are so honest about how you feel.
Thanks Meike. This, too, shall pass. This is nothing compared to when Gregg was having cancer treatment, and I'm thankful every day that in the grand scheme of things, this is nothing.
DeleteI hope your Mum is getting a chance to go out and do things and enjoy herself. I know she misses your father terribly, though.
I am glad to read that Gregg is doing better. I know it must be exhausting on your end, and I do understand the boring and busy! Yesterday it hit 90 degrees, but this week there is a cooling trend and one day it will only get into the 60s. I really like Talarico too. If he doesn't win in Texas and Paxton wins, I will lose faith in humanity.
ReplyDeleteHope Gregg keeps improving (and no more fainting!). I hope he is through the worst of it and it will get easier each day. Take care of you, too, Jennifer! xo
ReplyDeleteThank you for your effort. I hope that it makes a difference.
ReplyDeleteGlad to read about Gregg Jennifer, I've been thinking about you guys and how he was getting along. Your volunteer postcard work sounds wonderful, and I know very well how you feel being home so much. And oh man I hope James T wins Texas too!
