Just a nice October day

It's a beautiful fall morning at my house, and a rare kind of day for me lately: I'm off work and have the house all to myself! Gregg was able to resume his Wednesday aquarium maintenance jobs last week, so he'll be working all day, and I'm off this week for fall intercession. I enjoy the occasional day at home alone, especially when the weather is this nice. I expect I'll spend a large part it on the back porch (and maybe the hammock) with a book. I'd also like to take the dogs on some short neighborhood walks. We can all use the exercise, and it's so nice out.

The dental issues Gregg and I have had are getting better. He's adjusting fairly well to the temporary dentures (even with their considerable shortcomings) and now the worst thing seems to be having patience with the healing process. They're now saying he might not get his final implants until March. It seems that the more time you give the bones in the jaw to heal, the better the fit and function of the permanent work. Even if that's disappointing, it's for the best to wait and do everything exactly right. At least he's not in pain, is able to eat a bigger variety of food now, and his smile looks perfectly presentable. My tooth pain has quieted down, thanks to the half-done root canal and an antibiotic. I go to the endodontist to have the root canal finished next week and that afternoon my dentist will place the permanent crown. It's been a lot of trouble over one tooth! Thank goodness it feels better now, though.

I finally pulled out some fall decorations last weekend. Or, rather, I had Gregg climb up into the attic and bring down the fall decorations! Haha. I'm keeping everything pretty simple this year, but I do plan to carve a couple of pumpkins. Here's the simple wreath I made for the front door, along with pumpkin #1:

Later this weekend I want to show you some fall crafts I've been working on, and also some new recipes I've tried. For now, though, I'm off to enjoy my solitary afternoon.

Have a great day, everyone!

  1. So glad you’re both adjusting and improving in the mouth department. What hell! March isn’t bad at all for a new mouthful of implants from what I’ve heard. I know people who spent a year and half on one tooth. Your both troopers!

  2. It is gorgeous in SC this week isn't it?
Love the front door but who's that in the glass?

    1. It IS gorgeous, Bob! And that's my husband in the glass. He wasn't too happy when he saw himself captured in the front door!

  3. Today is the first day my blog reading list is working in many weeks. My blog has no comments since Sept. 24. Would you leave a comment to see if that is working again? You and Gregg are going through a lot of tooth misery. I hope those dental problems get fixed. Yes, March will give his bones time to strengthen for a good implant.

    1. Terra - I don't see any posts on your blog since September 14. I know I lost a lot of blogs on my blog list when blogger was having all those issues. I'm not sure what is happening. Most other blogs are updating now.

  5. Enjoy your Quiet Day. It is great to have a day off. And I am happy to hear both of you are doing better with the tooth pain. Not a fun time. I hope your next appointment goes more smoothly and you can put this all behind you. And I hope that Gregg has the patience to wait until March so that he has the best experience too. Hopefully no more dental issues for either of you!!!

    1. Unfortunately I have some more dental work coming up at the beginning of next year, and it's going to be kind of big, but then after that I should be totally free of any dental work for the foreseeable future. I had a crown and bridge that was badly done years and years ago and it all needs to be redone. After that, I'm going to be the most thorough brusher and flosser you've ever seen! I'm tired of spending money on my teeth!

    1. I crave alone time at home, although I hate saying that because it sounds like I don't want my husband around, which is definitely not the case! There's just been so little alone time since he (mostly) retired.

  7. I am glad that both you and Gregg are doing better with your dental issues. And for me, there is nothing better than spending time on a nice fall day to myself. It is perfect!

  8. We're having late summer weather here in Central Pa, at least for today. Tomorrow we'll be back in the mid 60s (F) with rain. My dentist keeps pushing implants, and I keep saying "nope." I've known too many people who endured much until the implants were in and they could start eating again. Your decorations are nice!!

  9. Lovely picture! And your correct. Having been through the implant thing that is correct. When I got my first set of implants, they were what the teeth would look like but were light weight to let the bone and the rods bond together. It's also why they didn't want to eat anything to make me chew. It was all soft foods for 4 months!!!!! After that I got the permeant set made of titanium and porcelain.
