Last Friday morning I got a text from my friend Judon, mom of Little P. She told me he had a city league football game the next afternoon and would love it if I could make it out to see him play. I don't know (or care) anything about football, but I love Judon and P., so I went.
It was a crisp, beautiful fall day, and I got to see this young man and his team win the game!
Look how much he's grown! I guess I should stop calling him "little". The three of us went to lunch afterwards, and as we were leaving the restaurant, I was shocked to realize he's as tall as I am now. He'll be 13 in March. Unbelievable.
Still good friends all these years later!

He looks so happy to have been on the winning side..
How nice that you could go to cheer him on. He looks terrific and has a great smile!
Sweet photo ... and those darn kids and the way they grow!!!
He's doing his Mum (and his friend Jennifer) proud!! As you say, not so little anymore, and his team won the game - what's not to love, even if you (like me) don't actually care about football :-D
This post makes me feel old! LOL
Me too Steve!!
I'm very proud of him. He's such a good, well-mannered boy. His mama is doing a good job.
It's crazy how fast they grow up!
He does have a nice smile!🙂
And then we went out for Mexican food! A good day.
Enjoy the fun! In a few years he'll be busy thinking about other things.
It means so much to kids when adults show up for their activities! Thank you!
He's so grown up! It's really nice that you went to his game.
Love,
Janie
Please continue to call him Little P, otherwise we wouldn't know who you meant!
What a joyous kid! Soon he will TOWER over you.
I think it's time to stary calling him Teenage P!
Your relationship with Judon and Big P is so special. Judging by the last picture, he thinks the world of you. I hope that the connection carries on for many years.
Yes, I remember with our niece and nephew that the teenage years led to a certain distance for a time. Who has time for old aunts and uncles when the whole world is opening up before you? Then in later young adulthood those old people become precious again. I hope we're always friends!
When I was debating whether or not to go, it occurred to me that P. and his mom don't have much family to turn to, just like me. He's just like a nephew to me.
It was good to see him (his mom, too!)
Got it! Haha.
He sure will. He already wears a men's size 12 shoe! He's going to be very, very tall I think.
He'll be a teenager in March! We have the same birthday.
They feel like family to me. And just like me, they don't have much "blood" family to count on. Judon's parents have both died, her only sibling lives in Atlanta, and P.'s father lives in Atlanta too and isn't really in the picture (I think he remarried and has a new family).
It is shocking to me how very quickly teenagers sprout. I bought William a pair of chinos and put them away for Christmas. When I saw him at the wedding I was shocked to see that he shot up another two inches. I gave him his pants while he was here last weekend. Tim was a little grumpy about it. I was just afraid to wait until Christmas for fear the pants would no longer fit!
Little P is looking quite grown up too. How long have I been reading you? I am sure I remember him as a little guy.
I'm not sure how long you've been reading, but I first met P. when he was 5 or 6 years old. I get teary eyed when I think of how fast kids' childhoods fly by. I'm glad I never had kids--my heart couldn't take it.
