More roses!

On Friday my two new bare root David Austin roses arrived! I didn't waste time; yesterday morning I did the recommended root ball immersion in buckets of water, and in the late afternoon I planted them on either side of the Eustacia Vye. That particular bed is finished now (aside from some possible future companion plants for the roses). It's on the south side of the screened porch, and the three rose varieties are Benjamin Britten, Eustacia Vye, and Desdemona. Considering that last year my Eustacia bloomed less than two months from planting out, and then bloomed again in the summer, I have high hopes of seeing all three flowers this year.

You'll be in roses heaven this summer!

Hope they will fare well. We're at least 2 months from planting anything here yet.

Your gardens will be amazing this year. You’ve planted so many beautiful things in your years there.

You're planting roses and we're still getting snow. Good luck with the roses! I love them.

We are still getting snow, too. But I know my daughter and son-in-law are dreaming about spring and planting - the catalogs are out!

Hi Jennifer- First time commenting! I'm north of you (richmond, va.) and we're getting sleet/snow etc now - so no planting yet. But I have ordered some David Austin roses and i wonder if they come with the instructions/suggestions for planting?- (you mentioned soaking them). Yours are beautiful and were so successful- You seem to have a green thumb

Hello! It's ok to plant bare root roses in late winter as long as the ground isn't frozen, and our ground never really freezes anyway. They're dormant when they arrive. Yes, they have care guides in the shipping boxes (that's how I knew to soak them).

Thanks for stopping by! Which DA roses did you order? I'd love to hear about them!

They're dormant so the fact that we still have cold weather in store shouldn't matter. I'd be shocked if we got any more snow this year!

I hope so! I need to buy some vases!

Are you due for a blizzard this week? Stay warm!

I have a rack full of 2 inch tomato seedlings under grow lights right now, too!

Oh, those catalogs are dangerous! Get too carried away and your back won't thank you in late spring! Haha.

I love reading about your plans for the garden, be it flowers or vegetables. It gives you so much joy, and that shines through every time you post about it.

They look like nice strong healthy plants. They should give decades of pleasure.

They are really something to look forward to.

Those bare roots in water are beautiful, when we ponder their nature,
and the blossoms that will spring forth soon.
Eustacia Vye was a young woman in The Return of the Native by
Thomas Hardy. Benjamin Britten was touched with genius.
I hope Marcus is behaving himself.

We've just planted camellias along the front of the garage; we have some in the back and the blooms are gorgeous so we'll see how these do!

I did not know there was a rose named after Benjamin Britten! What a gorgeous bloom! You are going to get a beautiful return on all those roses.

I'm no good at gardening but you sure know what you are doing! Those will be lovely.

Thank you! I do love my gardening.

I think so, too. ❤️

We all need small bits of joy these days, I think.

They are beautiful, and I marvel at their potential. I love the "literary" David Austin roses. I wish I had room for a dozen more.

Several neighbors have gorgeous red and pink camellias blooming at the moment. I wish you good luck with yours!

I hope to get masses of beautiful roses for cutting and bringing into the house.

No, I'm actually very new to growing roses! Thank you though. :)

I ordered ‘Vanessa bell’ and ‘snow goose’. VB is yellow mainly, tinged with pink/white and is fragrant and bushy. Snow goose looks like those Kleenex ‘flowers’ we made in grade school - ruffled, white - a rambler. Enough sun is my concern- I’ve pruned some shaggy trees and hope I’ve got some good spots ready.

I can't wait to see what they look like!

You are being a good mummy to those roses Jennifer. I am a little surprised that you have not yet planted a Jennifer Rose.... "Jennifer is a breathtaking Hybrid Tea rose, perfect for gifting or as a heartfelt tribute. Its rich, deep pink blooms, accented with mauve tones and elegantly scalloped edges, exude a delightful fragrance. These stunning flowers appear singly or in small clusters atop strong, upright stems."

Jennifer said...

Well, I had no idea there *was* a Jennifer rose (thank you!) but I'm not really interested in Hybrid Tea roses. I have such limited space, and I spent years lusting after the DA English roses. :)

Same! Of course I'll post pictures.
