July is here, and with it another (almost) record heat wave. It's not even cooling down very much at night. In fact, I think it just gets more unbearably humid as the sun sets. I hate the feeling that I'm missing out on so much of the season, but I just can't stand the heat. The motivation to do much of anything just isn't there!
Speaking of which, the 4th was the hottest day of the year so far, so we stayed at home. About two miles up the highway (at a large soccer complex) the city put on a big event: live music, food trucks, games and vendors, and then a drone light show followed by a massive 30-minute fireworks display. It was supposed to go on until 10:30pm, and it sounded like it did. I'm not a fan of large crowds on a good day, much less when it's 100 degrees outside. So instead of going out, we grilled hot dogs and fresh corn on the cob for our supper and had ice cream for dessert.
When it started to get dark, we watched a movie: Project Hail Mary. I'm not usually much of a sci-fi fan, but I like Ryan Gosling and the movie had great reviews. And I absolutely loved it! The special effects were better than fireworks, and the story was just wonderful, full of sadness but also hope and quite a bit of humor. It was, without a doubt, the best film I've seen in ages and a great choice for the Fourth of July. I plan to watch it again soon.
We were up in Hendersonville over the weekend and it was nicely cool ... now we're back and I don't even want to pen a door!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's like opening the oven door!
DeleteHey I just bought the book "Project Hail Mary" a few days ago--but I'd love to see the movie! I'm glad you enjoyed it, I love a good sci-fi film :^)
ReplyDeleteThe movie was excellent and it's streaming free on Prime. I can't recommend it enough!
DeleteThat's a good film recommendation. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI highly recommend it!
DeleteYes! Thanks for the recommendation! We didn't do squat for the 4th.
ReplyDeleteThe film is streaming free on Prime. Definitely worth watching. I cried a couple of times but in the best possible way!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the movie recommendation, I plan to watch it. It is streaming now.
ReplyDeletePopnsome popcorn and settle in. It's so good!
DeleteSG tends to resist sci fi but every so often one comes along that he enjoys. Maybe I’ll try and FORCE this on him. I think I’m more tolerant of the heat (or stupid about it) but crowds and heat do NOT go together. Anyway I love hot dogs on the grill and SG loves corn on the cob (or as he calls it, sweet corn.
ReplyDeleteI also tend to resist sci fi, and man alone in space sci fi sounds awful to me, and I LOVED it. Really loved it. There's so much heart in it! Tell him to trust me and give it a try.
Delete30 minutes of fireworks bloody hell thats a lot of bloody fireworks
ReplyDeleteA lot of money spent, too.
DeleteAt 101 (F), the 4th was our third hottest day of the year. The Hail Mary Project is a great film about friendship and loyalty, and the classroom scene at the end speaks volumes about both.
ReplyDeleteFist my bump! 🤛
DeleteWe did go to my daughter's for lunch, but we were stay home in the ac for the 4th, too.
ReplyDeleteIt's almost always too hot here for outdoor activities in July.
DeleteI've heard good things about that film. Thanks for the recommendation, and I have amazon prime. I am not a fan of sci fi so it wasn't on my radar. It has been miserably humid here in central Virginia too, and it quickly zaps any energy that I have.
ReplyDeleteI think you'd like it. Ryan Gosling is a middle school science teacher!
DeleteI know it's a lot hotter and humid in your part of the world, but I can relate so well to the feeling of it being too hot to do anything. Also, those big crowds would not be for me, and even less so in that kind of heat. Still, it's good that people who wished to do so had the chance to get out and celebrate, and I'd much rather have a controlled, official fireworks display than stupid people faffing around with private fireworks, risking life and limb - their own and that of others.
ReplyDeleteFireworks are legal here, and we normally have lots of stupid people faffing around with them, but this year seemed kind of subdued as far as private fireworks. I guess with the economy and the state of the country being what they are, people weren't feeling it this year.
DeleteI've heard that's a good movie. I hope it comes to a streaming service I have.
ReplyDeleteIt's streaming on Prime at the moment.
