Results....

Today is the final day of my 6 week gluten-free diet experiment. I'm proud to say I didn't cheat, not even once. I can be extremely stubborn when I make up my mind firmly to do something! It was a real challenge but I was determined to give it a fair shot to see if my skin issues would improve. And the verdict?

I can't tell much difference, to be honest. For a while I thought the skin was improving, but it became apparent pretty quickly that it was just the normal ebb and flow of the flare ups I've experienced for years. I had thought there was a chance I might suffer from Dermatitis herpetiformis  instead of standard eczema, but apparently not. I had one semi-bad flare after a couple of stressful days (stress is a known trigger for eczema) and another one right before my period last month. What I was eating didn't seem to make much difference at all. So much for that!

On the bright side, I won't have to face a life without bread. That would be a hard, hard life! For my birthday next week I've ordered myself a luscious chocolate cake to enjoy. And tonight, for the first time since January, I might just have a sandwich!!! Oh, how I've missed grilled cheese sandwiches!

The great Gluten-Free Challenge is officially over!

ps...I know I promised you all a book review. I'm working on it and hope to have it ready by the end of the week. Stay tuned!

  4. A life without grilled cheese sandwiches is just a life lacking. I’m glad you do not need to go gluten free!

  5. My youngest granddaughter suffered terrible flare ups of eczema, we purchased a product called Seba Med at Costco and it worked wonders.

  6. I would think the biggest test is going back to bread again. If you have a nasty reaction, you'll know where the problem lies!

  7. Wow, you've done well - I didn't even think the 6 weeks were over yet, but you timed the experiment well so that you would know before your birthday whether there would be a "proper" cake or not :-)

  8. I just read an article that says we all need gluten in our diet except for celiac patients.

  9. Well, as you said, at least you won't have to give up on bread and bread products! I call that a victory overall!

  10. I'm impressed you stayed on it for so long, it's really hard not to eat wheat. I wish it had been the answer to your eczema problem, but at least now you know for sure you can eat wheat!

  11. Good for you! Something that helped me (in addition to being gluten free) is following the Feingold Diet. I have found some foods I can't tolerate, and some that I can only tolerate small amounts once in awhile. I had a rash that 6 doctors never figured out. I also had cancer, chemo and radiation and this all happened after that, so who knows what did what? If you are interested, do a search for the Feingold website.

  13. I don't think my comment got saved. Now I have to rely on memory, which isn't the best. Congrats on going on the gluten-free experiment. Sorry it didn't give you the results you were seeking. I went gluten free for a long time and it was a tough transition because gluten tastes pretty darn good. Enjoy all of those meals you missed. Take care.

  16. OK, I don't know what is going on, but those posts from jorjorbeth are spam or something and I wouldn't click on those links, just to be safe.

I did not make those posts, but they seem to have appropriated my words.
