Yesterday I went to the local Greek Orthodox church here in Florence with Marla and her husband for the annual Greek festival. The food is always outstanding and half the city turns out for a meal or a box of sweet pastries to take home. There is also dancing, music, and traditional clothing and crafts on display provided by the elders of the church. Yesterday I went inside the actual church for the first time to look around. Here are some photos I took to share with you. It was all so impressively ornate...simply beautiful.
The windows are outstanding. My town, and Cleveland, have large Greek festivals every year. Baklava heaven.
ReplyDeleteWe have a lovely Greek Church, that part of burned down.
ReplyDeleteThe festive sounds like so much fun plus the food is always so good,
Wonderful photos !
cheers, parsnip
That is an especially beautiful church.
ReplyDeleteOPA! pastitsio (http://www.mygreekdish.com/recipe/pastitsio) and baklava for all!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful stained glass windows. I love Greek food.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful windows! And that's appropriate since ever since My Big Fat Greek Wedding, my first thought is always Windex.
ReplyDeleteLike the others here, I think the windows are most beautiful. Ornate is definitely the right word for all the splendour in that church!
ReplyDeleteI like Greek food occasionally, especially things like the spinach and feta filled savoury pastry bags meant for starters, but always enough to make me not order a main course.
Wow, what a beautiful church! Is there a large Greek community where you live? I love how Orthodox churches have their own "look" -- the arches and domes, the icons, the blue and white colors.
ReplyDeleteA little piece of Greece in South Carolina! The saintly images are just like the ones I saw in a couple of churches in Corfu.
