Voodoo in South Carolina

As incredible as it may seem, Voodoo is still alive and well here in my home state. You still hear about people putting "roots" (spells) out on other people, especially in poor, rural, predominantly African American parts of SC. Here is a link to an interesting article about Voodoo and the famous Dr. Buzzard of Beaufort county.

  1. My African friend in Germany who runs a bar in the North, brews a drink she calls 'Roots'. It's lethal.

  2. Somehow this doesn't surprise me. What does surprise me is that anyone actually believes in it.

    1. Some of the really poor, uneducated people in rural parts of the state are unbelievably ignorant. I don't mean that as a shot at them, it's the same with isolated poor folks all over the world.

  3. It's scary, not because of any real power behind voodoo curses (and blesings?), but because so many people still believe in it, and of what they are ready to do for their belief - same with all fanatics, no matter what they call their religion.

    1. Yes, it was the slaves from Africa that first brought Voodoo to SC. Some of those beliefs still persist in their descendents to this day.

    2. There have been many atrocious crimes against children in the name of witchcraft, exorcisms and voodoo in London, including those which have resulted in death. There are social services teams and police who work exclusively on this.
