Orchids

When I saw these two beauties for sale at my neighborhood grocery store for a very low price, I decided to give orchids another try. Aren't they pretty?

I love the color. Right before taking this photo I noticed that my shirt matches the flowers.

So far the sunny window in my bedroom seems like a good place for them. I hope I can keep them alive!

My ten year old orchid is the variety on the left. I understand these are the lowest on the ladder of orchids, and I don't care. I think they are lovely and faithful.

Beautiful. You made a great buy.
No direct sunlight they might burn.

Are you feeling better ? Hope so ! No flu for you.

A great find, and you simply had to buy them. I am sure they will keep - just leave them to their own devices most of the time, a little water once a week is enough.

They are lovely. I have kept this type of orchid for many years, and I have 3 in flower at the moment. The main thing is not to let the roots sit in water....just let water flow through the pot every so often, and let it drain before putting back in the covering pot. Good luck!

Steve Reed in West Hampstead, London should be able to give you a few useful tips on orchid keeping. I believe that watering and over-watering is a key issue but otherwise I know nothing about house orchids.

I love orchids, but have never tried growing and caring for them. You picked some beauties.

What a gorgeous colour, I'd certainly have bought those, too!

I can't seem to keep them alive. If you discover the secret, please let us know and I'll try again.

I commented yesterday, but it isn't here now ! ( I said that they must not stand in water)

Bravo for taking the plunge! The secret, I've found, is good drainage. My unasked-for advice: Never let them stand in water. More frequent watering with complete drainage, and with special orchid mix soil (rather than conventional potting soil, which will hold too much water) should be your key to success!
