Wish me luck!

I'm meeting with a realtor after work today! We're finally getting the ball rolling on finding a home of our own and I'm very excited!

I hope I feel a good rapport with this woman. She helped a former coworker of mine and his wife find a house this summer, and they had good things to say about her. She has 25 years of experience in banking and real estate in this area, and she works for a respected realty company. She seemed pleasant on the phone, but this will be our first face to face meeting. We're going to sit down and discuss what Gregg and I are looking for in a house and hopefully by next week we can start actually looking at properties. That is, if all goes well at this initial meeting! My friend told me that she fought hard to get them the house they wanted at a price they can afford. I hope we have a good experience with her, too!

Please wish me luck!

  1. Indeed it must be exciting. Owning your own home makes you feel a bit bullet proof about what happens in the world, at the mercy of no one, even though that is not true. Good luck with your home hunting.

  4. The realtor seems to have good credentials, it's brilliant when you find someone who works well for you.
Of course I wish you good luck; it's an exhausting business buying a house.
And I see Marco has made it into your profile pic. Did he growl about that?

  7. Wishing you the best. The whole experience is fun, until...dun dun duuuun..the paperwork! My eyes glazed over and I think I signed over my first born son. I know I marked the White box for race, accidently. Balder Half says that's how we got the loan. Well I was half right. Seriously, I hope you find what you're looking for and the whole menagerie will live happily ever after.

  10. Wishing you luck and fun! I love house-hunting. Jerry, not so much. The first house we ever looked at, he got so stressed that he threw up in their bathroom. I took the realtor upstairs so she wouldn't hear him.

  11. Of course I wish you and Gregg the best of luck! You are good, hard-working people and you deserve a home of your own. But here's a thought Jennifer. You could ask the realtor how much your current rental property is worth. Then tell your landlord that you are planning on moving out but you would like to make an offer to buy your current home. Such a move, if successful, would save a lot of hassle and unnecessary expense.

  13. real estate must be a lot different over there. My thinking is you only need a good realtor if you're selling. For buying you just need to find the right house!

On the night we bought a house I couldn't sleep at all and it's been one of my best decisions ever. I hope the same goes for you

  14. Can you not just scan the web? If you avoid the 'middle man' you'll save an awful lot of money!

  15. Dear Jennifer, by the time you'll read this your meeting will have already taken place. How did it go?
Like Cro, I think you'd save lots of money without an agent. The flat where I have been living for almost 15 years now is only mine because I was able to buy it directly from the owner; I could not have afforded the fees real estate agents usually take in this country.

  16. Thank you all for the comments! I'm getting ready for work and don't have the time to reply to you all individually right now. I'll do another post tonight or tomorrow and address some of the questions you've asked.

The meeting went really well. I liked the agent and we talked for nearly two hours, and I think she'll do a good job for us. :)

  20. Some advice from a real estate closing Secretary of 10 years: Get a thorough home inspection of the potential home by someone NOT recommended by your agent or lawyer; if you don't jive with the real estate agent, CHANGE AGENTS (This happened to me and the 2nd agent was sent from heaven & found us the perfect home in our price range); don't settle...your perfect home is out there; be sure to look at bank repossessed houses; always offer LESS than the asking price...we offered $15,000 less and they accepted...you can always counter-offer, but you can't go down; be patient...we looked at over 20 houses before finding ours. Happy hunting!!!! xo
