Porch garden

The weather here has been absolutely gorgeous. Cool, sunny, blue-sky days are followed by crisp, clear, starry nights. You couldn't ask for anything better. Being outdoors all day has been a joy and the best part of all this time off at home.

The yard has never looked better.  Everything is neat and trimmed, weeded and mown. The porch has been thoroughly cleaned. I even mopped it with Fabuloso (of course I thought of Mary!) and the tile floor smelled nice afterward and feels good on bare feet. All of our houseplants have gone out there to spend the next few months, and I added two beautiful hanging baskets of Boston ferns, purchased at the small open air farmer's market where I go to buy fresh vegetables. The porch is definitely my happy place these days.

The fig tree that I started from my friend Carol's cuttings last summer.
I may plant it in the yard this fall.

The orchids seem happy outside.

Handsome Georgie enjoys the porch!

Ginger thought I was holding a morsel of food. (I wasn't.)

The little ornamental pomegranate given to me by a friend.
If you look closely, you can see tiny little fruit buds popping up all over it.

Speaking of pomegranates, I had one that I grew from a small seedling in a large pot for years
prior to moving here. A year ago, I planted it in the ground beside the porch. It's shot up to about 7 feet tall, and it also has fruit (or are they flower?) buds for the first time.

We've had this ficus for longer than we've been married. It was largely neglected for years when the little sparrow Chip lived in it, but it's always managed to hang on. We're hoping to grow it out some on the porch this summer. It will go back in our den late in the fall.

I have a plant that my friend Kathleen gave me and I don't even know what it is and I can't seem to identify it but I love it and yesterday I broke off a small piece to put in some water to see if I can root it and I stuck a leaf of it (it has large and sturdy leaves) into a small pot of dirt and just the hope that one of these will make more of itself has brought me pleasure. There is nothing so cheering as having plant babies, I think. Yours are beautiful and I can tell that you love them.
Yay for Fabuloso!

So nice to see you are enjoying your time at home. The pomegranate is getting ready to flower and with the help of some insects those flowers will turn into fruit. With the spring cleaning my greenhouse got the other day, I sat a bunch of house plants out for the neighbors to take and they last more than ten minutes.

Love your garden patio, not to mention your 4 footed family.

I wanna spend time on your warm porch drinking wine and petting doggies.

it's been like winter up here this week; no sun, rain, cold, wind. I have not been able to enjoy my sunporch yet. :(

Your plants are all looking great! We planted our fig tree in the yard just a few months ago. It's been in a pot for several years but it was beginning to look a bit strangled and we decided it needed more space. I hope the winters don't pose too much of a problem for it.

Your plants are beautiful and I will admit I am especially partial to ferns. I love your porch too. It is so nice to have a warm, inviting place like that to sit. Enjoy!

Everything looks so lovely. Yes the second you plant a Pomegranate it will grow like crazy. We use them as windbreaks.
The Gud Dugs look very happy !

Your plants are going to thrive in that porch. Beautiful fern.

Your plants are great. That rose is dashing. I would love to grow a pomegranate tree; I think that might be the flower bit.

I am jealous of those orchids. And is that porch screened? It must be. I think Marco has spent some time out there.

My porch is screened! I'm glad, too. It's the only reason Marco can come out there, and mosquitoes would be a real problem around here in the summer without screens.

The rose IS dashing! I plan to plant a hedge of them (they're miniature) in front of the porch.

Thank you Sue. These are my first ferns!

I'm excited about the pomegranate! They're uncommon (but not unknown) in this area.

It really is a wonderful haven for us!

I feel so lucky! Thanks Bob.

I'm going to baby our fig for a couple of years when we first plant it outside, until it's nice a d strong.

Yes, I do love plant babies! I have gardenia cuttings out on my porch that came from another friend. It makes me so happy.

George gets my vote for the best beast on the patio.

Enjoy your Figs. As for the Pomegranate, the flowers are the same on both fruiting and flowering varieties, so keep your fingers crossed.

Your porch garden is an absolute delight! I think the ferns are my favourites, but all your plants are lovely and doing very well outside. Does Marco sometimes sit on the sturdier plants?

I love your plants and your porch. My happy place is outdoors too, on my covered patio. Your ferns look so lush and green, they don't do well for me, so enjoy them.

Thanks for sharing these lovely images Jennifer. Nature and sunshine have a rare ability to lift our spirits in troubled times.
