Results

I went back to the doctor yesterday to have the patch tests and tape removed from my back and the results read. The doctor found 7 things that I'm allergic to, two of which are commonly used in manufacturing shoes. Here's a snapshot of the information sheets I was given on the things I need to avoid:

It's the p-tert-Butylphenol Formaldehyde Resin and the Black Rubber Mix that are commonly used in shoes. Bacitracin, a topical antibiotic, was a surprise, and everything else can be found in my shampoo, detergent, deodorant, etc. It's going to be fun trying to find alternatives for everything (sarcasm) not to mention looking for shoe alternatives that don't use the resins and rubber that I react to, but at least now I have some answers.

  1. Wow! Even Bacitracin. Who would have imagined? Good luck with the shopping. You'll have to travel with a magnifying glass so you can read the ingredients.

  2. You're right about the magnifying glass. I had a hell of a time reading the tiny print on my shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, etc!

  3. Yikes. Seems like stuff hard to avoid unless you are a detective. Good luck with that.

  6. No more shoes for you! It's bare feet from now on! Better stock up on socks.

  9. I looked at the shoe allergy link above. Wow. Of course some people would be allergic to all those chemicals involved in shoe manufacturing. I am aware of the thousands of chemicals that make up junk food, but shoes. Come on!

  10. Now you know! I really hope you are able to fine alternate products. It’s so weird that shoes were responsible for allergic reactions but we can develop allergies out of the blue! - Jenn

  11. As you say, at least now you know, and can start to do something about it. Hopefully, cutting products containing your allergenes will make you much better very quickly; I have no idea how long any of them remains in your system before they are gone completely.

  12. Interesting! I bet it's going to be a challenge finding out which products to use and which not, but once you've done that you should be home free.
