Winter weather weekend

Today is an "e-learning" day for the schools in our district. There wasn't all that much melting of snow yesterday, and what little there was froze overnight (it was 12 degrees, or -11 Celsius, at sunrise this morning) so the roads aren't safe.

I like working from home; I brought my work laptop home so I can finalize payroll and take care of some other daily tasks, and the receptionist and I are dividing up the day to answer the office phone via Zoom app. I'll be done with my "shift" before lunchtime.

When it was just starting to snow on Saturday, one of the squirrels we're always feeding showed up at our dining room window and looked in at us imploringly. I took a big handful of shelled walnuts out there and put them on the windowsill, and the squirrel had a little feast.

I'm not sure I showed you a picture of the new ottoman we got for the front room for Christmas. Here it is in the cozy spot by the fireplace where we watched the snowstorm come in.

And here are the makings of a treat I had Saturday night while sitting by the fire. Guess the cocktail?

Late Saturday night when it was really snowing hard.

Early Sunday morning...

Late yesterday afternoon.

The full moon rising last night.

Also last night...look at all these icicles! The house is covered in them.

It's been a real winter weekend here in Florence!

  1. You are truly having a winter! We have yet to get snow , just loads of rain- we are now out of the ten year drought. Your cosy living room is so inviting. Lovely. Stay warm, stay safe!

    1. That's great news about getting out of a drought! Last year was very dry for us, and we could really use a rainy spring.

I really like our living room. The large tv, the two chairs, and the ottoman are all fairly new, and the fireplace really IS cozy right now.

  2. Was that a White Russian? How appropriate— and now I want one too!

  3. They should change the name of your state to Arctic Carolina. Brrr! It's much warmer in Yorkshire right now.

    1. It really is cold for us. The last few days have even broken some records!

  4. Jennifer, wow--you live in South Carolina, right?? I love the snowy photos and it looks like you had a cozy weekend but this is a little unreal. PS Your ottoman is very nice (I want to do the same) but I love your pair of chairs. You have nice taste. :^)

    1. Thank you for the compliments. The chairs were an anniversary gift and the ottoman was for Christmas.

  5. It has been really cold for us here in Virginia too. I cannot remember at time when it has stayed this cold for such a long time.

    1. It's not as cold today, finally, but it's been raining nonstop so it still feels chilly. All the snow is gone, though.

  6. It looks so beautiful, particularly from the warm comfort of the inside of your home.

  7. I love your cozy living room. Everything you need, right there.
What a weekend you had. It sounds like you've enjoyed it though.

    1. It was a really nice weekend. I didn't leave the house from Friday afternoon until Tuesday morning when I went back to work.

  8. A White Russian, just like The Dude in "The Big Lebowski!" Personally, I prefer a Black Russian -- no cream.

    1. I was hoping someone would catch that! I love TBL. Does a Black Russian just have vodka and kahlua? That sounds awfully strong if there's nothing to "cut" it with!

  9. It's snowing AGAIN here. The only think I can say is the snow is staying pretty clean and white with a new layer every day.

    1. I hate snow when it gets dirty and slushy. Thank goodness it never hangs around here long enough for us to get too sick of it!

  10. I love the new ottoman! White Russian was my favorite drink for a while. My father once told me we (his parents) were white Russians. But in hindsight, I think he said that because they were from Russia and they were white.

  11. Nice snow pics. Your temps should be on the rebound shortly, if not already, and those snow pics will really be a fond memory of a snow day from school.

    1. Yes, we're closer to normal now, and lots and lots of rain.

    1. Thank you! We have a large tv across from the chairs and it's fun to watch movies from that spot.

  13. The White Russian was the perfect choice!
I like the ottoman and the armchairs near the fireplace, but for me there would have to be a throw or rug as well, to wrap myself with, and then a good book - and of course that cocktail :-D
-11C is really cold. I think the coldest we've had so far this winter was -9 or -10C, and at the moment temperatures are hovering around freezing point (0C). Nearly all snow gone.

    1. We have a stack of throws off to the side, on the sofa. I'm usually wrapped up in one of them when it's cold. It's not a great reading spot because there's no lamp, but we keep meaning to get one. I do like to read on my Nook app from there, though.

  14. A cocktail when it's snowing hard is an idea.
They make me think of Dorothy Parker and the Algonquin New York.
So great you fed the squirrel. It made my day.

    1. The squirrel came BACK to that window yesterday and looked in, and like the suckers we are, we took him out another handful of walnuts. We're also feeding stray cats. Wild animals seem to know we're good for a handout. :)

      And I ADORE Dorothy Parker!

    1. Before we got the ottoman we definitely felt like something was missing. It's nice to put our feet up!

  16. If those icicles are still there, go knock them down! Freeze/thaw cycle is prime ice dam weather. Not fun. Unsolicited advice from a friend in Maine.

  17. I love seeing winter through the eyes of someone who sees it as a novel experience...and loves it. Your eyes are not my eyes, sistah!
