The last of our snow and ice melted away last night. I'm not sorry to see it go--it always starts to look slushy and dirty after a day or two, and then it's just unnecessarily messy. Not fun. Speaking of messy, it's been raining since late last night. Even though it's warmed up quite a bit, it still feels really chilly since everything is sopping wet. A little while ago I had to put a leash on George and force him to go outside. He hates rain, and he hadn't peed all day. Both dogs will walk to the back door, look out, and turn right back around. I don't blame them, but I do feel bad for them.
Since I'm stuck in the house and Gregg works on Wednesday afternoons, I'm making a loaf of homemade bread. I made a loaf a couple of days ago and it's almost gone. Making bread seems to get easier the more I practice. That's true of everything, I guess.
Oh! And look what came in the mail today! My first seed order for this year.

What a wonderful array of tomato seeds.
ReplyDeleteA treasure of tomatoes. Exciting. Poor George.
ReplyDeletePoor George! Those seeds make my heart hurt for warmer temps and spring. Jennifer your new profile pic is very nice. :^)
ReplyDeleteYou're going to have the best salads! I was going to say that April is too early/cold for us to plant here but today is an unheard of 64 degrees. The weather has gone wacky!
ReplyDeleteWe warmed up to melt the snow and make way for the rain!!
ReplyDeleteSeeds are Hope!
ReplyDeleteIt's always exciting to start planning the veg' growing. Have you tried growing Pak Choi (Bok Choi)? I love it, and I believe it grows very quickly.
ReplyDeleteOur cats always did the same as your dogs when the weather was like that. They'd have us open the door, walk there, sniff the cold and wet air from inside, turn around with an accusing look at us (as if WE had made that weather!) and retreated to their favourite places.
ReplyDeleteOne of my cats would never believe the weather just by having the door opened. She insisted making the rounds of the windows, facing different directions, to check if maybe there was better weather on the other side of the house!
How exciting to have those seeds arrive! Forellenschluss sounds German. I have never heard of this type of lettuce.
My previous dog ( schnauzer) would never go in the garden if it was raining, so I always had to take him out on a walk to do his " business" ! The " white peril" that we now have is so eager to run down the garden and bark at something and nothing that I don't think he notices the rain...does make life easier for me !
ReplyDeleteThe promise of so much tastiness to come.
ReplyDeleteMy winter garden has been a huge disappointment. My lettuces have not thrived, my collard greens are bonsai, same with my kale and both of those are usually so sturdy and dependable. Mustards and arugula are the only things that have really done well. I am not overly excited right now about the summer garden.
ReplyDeleteWe are slowly warming up a bit but it's way too early to think of Spring around hear. I'm sure the arrival of your seeds really improves your mood as you prepare for your garden.
ReplyDeleteMurray HATES going out in the rain. I have to force him to go. Shirley, on the other hand, couldn't care less. Maybe that is the Labrador Retriever in her.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that you grow your tomatoes from seed. Shirley always buys her tomato plants from a garden centre or plant sale. Mind you - ours are grown in a little greenhouse so she only nurtures 8 to 10 plants.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had rain for a while, it must be nice. Have fun with the garden!
ReplyDeleteAll right for seeds! I love seeing the photos of your beautiful garden produce. Some people in Jacksonville reported snow flurries last weekend. I kept going to the window to look for them so I could show snow to Princess, but I never saw any at our house. We did get rain a couple of days ago.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
That looks like a stellar selection of tomatoes. How I envy you! I know that the Black Cherries are going to be fantastic - I grew it back when I had a garden, and I've found a fantastic recipe at Pasta Grammar for a cherry tomato-only sauce that is out of this world. I used it with the huge Idaho bounty we found here and OMG it should SING for you!

Here in Toronto the huge snow we had is still on the ground. I only managed to shovel a small patch in the back yard for the dog before I threw out my back. The dog is no happy with it as it is not where she normally goes. It is 20 below this morning and she really resisted going out, but she did for a split second. She is fine with rain, she likes water. I only grew tomatoes once and I found out that I really don’t like them. Gigi
ReplyDeleteThose seeds are full of the promise of summer, aren't they? Glad your snow is gone, at least!
ReplyDeleteoh the excitement of seeds! I used to start my early toms every 2 February.
