Getting in the mood...

...for Halloween! I decided it was time to pull a few decorations out of the "holiday closet" to add a little seasonal cheer to the house.

I love my Edgar Allen Poe LED candle.

And just look at these cheerful guys!

I also added some purple lights and big fuzzy spiders to our front door, but I didn't take a picture because I'm not happy with the way it looks yet. I still need to buy a couple more pumpkins because I have two carving parties to attend before the big day! One is small, just me and Marla and Martina at my house where, in addition to carving pumpkins, we'll be discussing our book club selection for October (In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware). The other is a big party thrown every year by a couple I know. For the past 3 years I've had to turn down their invitation because I always had to work the Saturday night before Halloween, but this year, thanks to my new job and my wonderful work schedule, I was free to accept. I'm looking forward to it.

Speaking of parties, there's going to be a Halloween dance at the middle school! I volunteered to help out and I think it's going to be a lot of fun. One of the halls leading to the gym (where the dance will be held) is going to be a "haunted hallway" with games and activities. One of the science teachers has snakes, geckos, and a bearded dragon that will be on display. The 8th grade math teachers are having a "throw wet sponges at your math teacher" contest, and there's going to be Halloween bingo, games of Cornhole, and a costume contest in addition to the dancing and food. I'm not sure what I'll be doing yet, probably serving as a chaperone, but no matter what I do I think it will be a good time. And even better: I'll earn "comp time" that I can use later if I need to leave work early or come in late.

I'm also happy that I'll get to be at home on Halloween night this year, instead of having to work at the mall. I hope we get a few trick or treaters. I saw some candy at Walgreens that I'm planning to buy to hand out (along with chocolate bars):

Sugar skull lollipop rings!!!! How cool is that?

Do you enjoy Halloween? Do you have any plans for celebrating it? I'd love to hear about it if you do!

  1. I loved it as a child and I enjoyed it as a younger mother, taking my kids trick-or-treating. Now though, I really don't have much to do with it. I usually but a little candy and leave the front porch light on but it's been years since anyone came here to trick-or-treat. I do miss that, seeing the costumes and darling, shy children or the lurking, slightly embarrassed older ones.

    1. We only ever get a few, but I always enjoy seeing them. You have grandkids to celebrate with now, though....that must be fun!

  2. It is not such a big thing here but has gradually been moving across from the US in recent years. Our retail trade is pushing it to make some money at a time of year other than Christmas. I do not ever see any signs of Halloween in this rural area but I see the shop displays ao it must be happening somewhere.

    1. I know that in England it's no big deal. It's just a chance for lighthearted fun (to me).

    2. We have Guy Fawkes Day on 5th November and that is our fun night, with fireworks and sausages and baked potatoes. This is still celebrated where I live and whole villages have one large bonfire and food for all to join in.

  3. I haven't enjoyed Halloween since I was a kid when we could wander the neighborhood without our parents and go into houses to pick out our own candy. The streets looked like that scene from ET. Well, I haven't enjoyed Halloween since then except for carving pumpkins.

    1. That's how the streets looked when I was a kid, too. Halloween isn't the same for children these days.

  4. I date to the partyless age of a grade school past time, like Mitchell. I can only see the date now as exploitation by investors.

  5. First of all I love your new job. You can have fun instead of working on the holidays. Yea You !
No trick or treaters here. The long walk up my hill is just not worth it. Plus no young ones around here. I used to decorate every year outside. I might put up some orange fairy lights if I can find any. I have a copper and a pottery pumpkin for outside I might unpack them.
The Javelinas will eat the pumpkins, which is OK by me.

    cheers, parsnip

    1. You can always get treats for little Mr. Wilson! And I would enjoy seeing the javelinas. :)

  6. I hate to be a party pooper Jennifer but in our house we do nothing to mark Halloween - never have done and never will. When we were kids growing up in northern England there wasn't all this fuss about Halloween and absolutely no trick or treating. I guess I am just an old stuck-in-the-mud. Bah! Humbug!

    1. Aww, you sound jealous. You should be--Halloween when I was growing up was one of the best parts of childhood!

    2. I'm not jealous. As a child the focus was always on Bonfire Night/ Guy Fawkes Night which falls on November 5th. In Yorkshire November 4th was known as Mischief Night when we got up to all manner of tricks - including lifting off people's gates and throwing them over hedges or smearing door knobs with treacle. And the fireworks on Bonfire Night - that was something special. We didn't need the distraction of Halloween.

  7. I actually had a couple semi-traumatic things happen on Halloween when I was a kid and have hated if ever since. I’m with Yorkshire Pudding. Bah humbug.

My sister and brother-in-law LOVE Halloween and decorate for it in a huge way, more than Christmas.

  8. I don't really enjoy Halloween, but always make an effort for the sake of the local children. They are all growing up now, so I'm not sure if they'll be around this year; we'll see.

  9. Halloween isn't much of a thing here in the UK, although it gets more popular every year. We do some things at school, where all the American kids expect it! But we haven't had trick-or-treaters in years and years.

  10. I'm glad you get to enjoy Halloween. I'm not very interested in it. I'd probably feel differently if I were joining in the celebration you described at the middle school. It's been a long time since my daughter was in elementary school, but as each year went by, more and more complaints about Halloween came up because so many people associated it with satanism. It got to be ridiculous.

    Love,
    Janie
