Home improvement

The past few days have been exciting, because we hired a guy to partially remodel our screened porch! The bottom third of it is now enclosed and painted, and there's waterproof plastic "wood" on the bottom all the way around, to solve the problem of lots of moisture and pooling water at ground level rotting the old boards. He also installed a new, sturdier door with a doggy door already built in for George and Poppy. He just finished this afternoon and is currently cleaning up and getting ready to leave. He's done a good job, and we love it! It's so much better than before! We got a really good deal on the work, too, because Gregg's known the guy for a long time. There's several more projects that need doing around this old house, so we'll definitely be calling on him again!

The dogs will have to get used to a new doggie door in a new spot. They're not too sure about these changes (and have been less than thrilled with the building sounds going on outside over the last few days).

Of course, treats held on the other side helped convince them to give it a try! :)

  1. It's the little things that we can do that make the biggest differences sometimes. What a great new screened porch! And George and Poppy will be used to it in days.

    1. Yes, the screen used to go all the way to the bottom, with thin wooden slats that were getting mildew-y and rotten. Enclosing the bottom and putting waterproof boards on the ground level will make a huge difference! And the old screen door was broken and the screen was coming loose. The new door is much more sturdy. We spend a lot of time on the porch in the warm months, so I'm really happy we got this done!

  3. Having your porch fully enclosed makes it a very nice additional room. It looks very nicely built. I'm sure George and Poppy will enjoy the treats as they learn to love their new door.

    1. Well, the top half is still screen, but we're considering getting outdoor blinds that can be closed when the weather is bad.

  4. We just moved my big studio to the much smaller "Library" room (so posh) and put in a new doggie door in my bathroom/bedroom. They like the set-up in the old studio better.
I have always wanted a screened in porch that looks like yours ! This looks so pretty !

  5. That's a nice job. The dogos won't need treats to learn the way. Supper is on the other side of that door.

    1. Exactly! Treats and meals are always a great incentive!

  6. It looks very neat and brand new! I am sure the dogs will get used to their new door soon, especially as there are two of them and they watch and learn from each other.

    1. We ordered pretty new blue and green chair cushions for two of the porch chairs. Today or tomorrow I'm going to go out there and mop and clean and make everything ON the porch tidy to match the new shiny outside!

  8. That is exactly the sun room I want on the front of our house outside the sliding glass doors in the livingroom. That is the west side of the house and I think it will be a wonderful place to sit in the evening. I also think that in the winter time, it will be nice to have the extra protection and space to keep the cold away from those sliding doors.
