Crabby

Going back to work a couple of weeks early last summer is paying off again. We're on "winter intercession" which means that we have next week off! Yesterday was a half day for staff (students had the day off completely) and the joy as we all walked out to the parking lot at noon was palpable. It was a warm, springlike day with bright sunshine and blue skies, and the teachers were practically skipping to their cars! The break is very much needed, I think.

I'm looking forward to working on several garden projects next week. My crabapple tree has arrived! I snapped a photo of it the other day and texted it to Gregg. His response? "That's a stick! Is it dead?!" I explained to him that it's just dormant and that a "stick" was all I expected. He did make me laugh, though.

I'm thinking about planting it this week since we're in for mild weather. Does anyone out there know if that's okay, given that we're sure to have some cold nights between now and early April? How early is too early for a dormant tree? If we got a hard freeze I could always devise something to cover it, and I plan to mulch it really well. Answers on a postcard, as John would say.

  1. How exciting that you have next week off! We have Monday off here for President's Day, but that's it. It's hard to believe that the school year has flown by. Our last day is June 3, the week of Memorial Day. I don't have a green thumb so I cannot give you any advice!

    1. Enjoy the long weekend! And your summer will be longer than ours, but the time off right now is certainly nice.

  2. You're fine as far as planting it now. Just remember to water it, just because the top part looks like a stick doesn't mean the roots aren't growing.

  4. Yep. It's fine to plant it now. In fact, this is the best time to plant many fruit trees. Dave R is right.
    Enjoy your time off!

  6. Coming from a city where there is no such thing as freeze, I've no idea the answer. But living in a city where freeze is common, I think I better learn real quick. Good luck.

  7. Have you got a Garden Centre anywhere near - or where you could ring - or maybe search on line? We have had one or two sunny days and plants like violas have begun to flower in my garden which indicates that the soil is beginning to warm up - but I would be wary.

  8. Gregg‘s comment reminds me of a few years ago when Ripon received a Christmas tree for its market square by Harrogate borough council. It was not welcome, and an article in the Ripon Gazette had the headline More a Stick Than a Tree. Eventually, the mayor bought a new tree and everyone was happy.
    Enjoy your week off!

  9. Enjoy your break. I’m actually surprised by the size of the stick. Very exciting.

  10. Early spring is a good time to plant a crabapple. As early as the soil is workable. But yes, protect against a hard freeze.

  11. That is a thin tree. You should feed it with hamburgers, fries and pizza. Our local council planted a replacement magnolia tree on the public verge outside our house in mid-January. I suspect you will be okay planting yours out now. Better than having its roots all squeezed up in that pot.

  12. Alas I have not lived in "Zone 4-5" in years to answer this question.
It was an important question then: how soon to put things out of doors.
    good luck

  13. Enjoy that week off! It will be such fun to watch the crabapple tree grow. I agree with Weave, maybe check with a nursery or garden center to find out when the best time to plant is in your location.

  14. I've been reading that you want to plant a crab apple tree while the soil is cool and workable. Now seems like just the right time for you. However, I am still looking at snow here, so I am typing these words very wistfully.
