Postcards

Today my friend Karen hosted a small postcard writing party with lunch. We wrote postcards supporting a Democratic Senate candidate in Arizona, Ruben Gallego.

Karen made food inspired by Tim Walz and the state of Minnesota. First up, a Midwestern casserole (or "Hot Dish")

Then that typical Midwestern side: jello fruit salad. She even had a pretty mold for it!

And for dessert, her mother's recipe for chocolate sheet cake. Karen's family is from Missouri.

It was a tasty lunch and we got a lot of postcards done and ready to be mailed!

I'm planning my own postcard writing party  early next month. I got the postcards and voter lists from  Postcards to Swing States. I picked Georgia and Michigan, and got 200 for each. I'm going to have to invite lots of friends over to help me get through that many!

  1. What a worthwhile way to spend Labour Day! And your friend's "theme lunch" looks delicious. I don't care how much people make fun of jello salad, it was a staple of my childhood! My Mom had a couple of fabulous recipes and did them well!

And you know, how hard could it be to teach Marco to write? He could knock off those postcards during the day while you're at work!

    1. Marco needs a job, that's for sure! The little freeloader has been living on our dime for 16 years. Haha.

  2. Quite Midwestern indeed! Looks like a family get-together from my past.

  3. Good for you!
We have a good friend who has moved back to Minnesota which is where she's from who spent many, many Thanksgivings with us. She would occasionally make a hot dish. Tots were always involved.
And now I sort of want some Jello Salad. Damn.

    1. Minnesota seems to be a great state to live in, due in large part to Tim Walz. People laugh at jello salads, but lots of people love them.

  4. Gallego is an excellent candidate and Kari Lake CANNOT win. She is a nutcase. Thank you for doing that! Are those tater tots I see? I LOVE them and casseroles with them, especially if they also include eggs and cheese. Yum. I would pass on the jello though; it's sick food since my mom always fed it to me when I didn't feel good. Now I associate it with illness.

    1. Yes! Those are tator tots! If you look closely at the third photo you can see all the ingredients in it. The jello was okay, but the chocolate cake was excellent!

  5. Postcards are a wonderful boost to an election. And a good lunch, too.

  6. To my non-Midwestern eyes, the jello salad looks nothing like a salad and nothing like a side dish, but all like some kind of cake, and dessert.
I love the plate the chocolate cake is on!
The main dish looks great and very neat.

Your blog is the first time I have heard of such postcard parties. Do I get that right, you ask for a list of people's addresses and then send them cards to motivate them to vote for a specific candidate?
Unthinkable in Germany... you'd NEVER get people's private addresses like that, it's all regulated under Data Protection.
In any case, it sounds like a good way to make people THINK before they vote... and we over here across the pond are all anxiously watching what's happening in the US.

    1. Voter registration rolls are public information here. And yes, "get out the vote" efforts share lists of likely voters in particular states or districts to send postcards of campaign materials to.

Of course the jello "salad" isn't really a salad at all! :)

  7. Now that’s a Labor Day to make anyone proud. The food theme is hilarious. Turkey Trot Tater Tot Hotdish!

    1. I have 400 postcards to write and send out at the end of October! I'm going to need all the help from friends I can get! It helps me to feel like I'm doing something concrete to help the cause.

  9. Your hot dish looks good, as I'm hungry as I write this around lunch time!
Glad to be seeing your blog again, I've been gone from blogging for some time. Your's is doing well, I see, and good on you.
Thanks for keeping up the good fight. It seems we have a chance come November!

    1. It's good to see you!!! I think we have a chance, too, but we have to act as if we're way behind and keep up the hard work. Writing postcards is my way of feeling like I'm actually contributing something. Sitting around worrying doesn't help anything.

  11. This is the coolest idea for a luncheon get-together! Beats the heck out of Bridge and mimosas. Socially active, excellent hot dish; what more could you ask for? In fact I didn't even know this was a thing you could do, the postcards endorsing a candidate thing, that is. (I read back - my condolences on your garden. We're having a tough year here too.) X0

  14. I wish that Kari Lake was actually a lake and not a fake politician.
    "Whattya bin doin' Denny?"
"I bin fishin' up at Kari Lake!"
    "Catch anythin'?"
    "Just the usual cryptosporidiosis!"
