For John--not all Americans!

Sometimes I'm ashamed to be an American.  My friend John Gray's latest blog post is a perfect example of why--he's responding to what I can only assume is an American bigot who had the audacity to email him an awful anti-gay tirade criticizing his blog.

Oh, John. I'm so sorry. A whole lot of my fellow citizens here in the USA believe some despicable things. I put a lot of the blame on Fox (Faux) News.

Recently I've fallen in love with comedian Trae Crowder, or "The Liberal Redneck". People assume that if you're from the South here in the USA then you're an ignorant, inbred, conservative, Jesus-fetish-ing jerk. And I'll admit, we have more than our share of people like that. But not all of us, by a long shot. That's why the video rants Trae Crowder shares on YouTube are so hilarious to me--they tap into a whole under represented population of liberal, humanist, civil rights defending, free-thinking people who call this part of the USA home.

Here's a nice example of The Liberal Redneck's viewpoints. Enjoy! And remember, there's more of us than most people think!

The Liberal Redneck--Belief don't matter none!

  1. Thanks for leaving such a sweet comment on my blog! I am from Georgia, so I know there are plenty of people of whom you speak! I love that guy who does those videos -- he's going to have a lot to mock and make fun of for the rest of the year. I look forward to visiting here more often --

  2. Dont you dare apologise
Everywhere there are misguided souls ,and even if his words were inappropriate , I have no doubt he was in some way , well meaning.
I posted my reply because i knew the subsequent replies and comments by people all over the world would indeed silence him.....and that they have done.....he has not replied .....
    Thank you x

  3. Not only in America Jenny, it is sad but here in Italy too. I can't believe that in the year 2016 there are still so many narrow minded people around.
    Greetings Maria x

  4. When I read that I thought WTF !
What a super strange and weird thing to write to John.
But the big problem there are bigots everywhere. I know because several of John's friends have called me and you a fucking American. Not all Americans are war crazy bigots. Unfortunately their is plenty of hate and bigotry to go around.
My daughter is gay but that doesn't change the fact she is wonderful, caring ,and fabulous person. She is just herself just like John is just himself.

    cheers, parsnip and thehamish

    2. I've seen anti-American comments pop up on blogs from time to time. They used to bother me more than they do these days. People are just people, no matter where you go.

  5. Why would you be ashamed to be an American? That makes no sense to me. You had nothing to do with the moron who wrote to John Gray. America consists of 320 million people who live on 3.8 million square miles (9.9 million km) and we are quite diverse. There are stupid people in every country, in every society, in every religion. The idea that America is filled with stupid people is just as offensive as the meanspirited idea that the U.S. South is filled with ignorant hillbillies. Refuse to accept unfair stereotypes. And FYI, a solid majority (55% in 2016 polls) of these 320 million Americans support gay marriage and the numbers are steadily growing (used to be 37% in 2001). The times, they are a changing.

    1. I guess "ashamed" is a strong word....maybe "embarrassed" is better.

When I look at this year's election and the travesty of Donald Trump as a serious presidential candidate...it's embarrassing to me as an American.

  6. Trae is very funny (what I could understand of him). I also had a look at him talking about the bible being adopted as the official book of 'somewhere'. Hilarious.

    1. I wondered if he would be difficult for some of my foreign readers to understand...that Tennessee accent! :) I think the second video you mention was about Tennessee adopting the bible as the state book.

  7. Sadly, there are bigots everywhere, Jennifer. We have to live among them, but we don't have to be like them.

  8. I'm with you Jennifer. I love our country, but too many people are engaged in racist, misogynistic behavior. I thought we made progress when we elected President Obama. Now I think a certain person who is all over the place is turning back time. I love John Grey, too.

    Love,
    Janie

  9. As a Californian who hasn't traveled much within the US, it's certainly good to be reminded that there are sane, thoughtful folk across this large country. Trae Crowder is both sharp as a tack and a hoot!
