Tired

For someone who's only had to answer a few phone calls at work all week, I sure do feel worn out. Tomorrow is a half day (all staff leaves at 12pm) and then we have a three day weekend for Labor Day. The extra day off will be more than welcome. Two weeks back, and already I'm craving days off. Sigh. My job is fine, I'm just so tired. And I sure wish the heat would break.

I took George to the vet this afternoon right after work. It was time for his heartworm preventative shot, and he also needed an allergy shot. The poor boy has been miserably itchy for a week or two and can barely stand to be petted. He's chewed his paws and butt until they're red and irritated and sometimes he whines in frustration because he can't reach some areas that itch. He'll feel much better now that he's had the allergy shot. A heartworm preventative has been developed that can be given as a shot only once per year, and he had that too. I don't know if heartworms are a thing in the rest of the world, but here in the southern part of the USA they're rampant and will kill your dog. I'm glad they've developed the once a year thing, it's so much easier than having to remember a pill every month. It's expensive, though. The two shots today cost $250, and I know that the allergy shot is less than $50 of that. We've spent a small fortunate at the vet in the last couple of months.

Today George saw Dr. Causey's wife (also Dr. Causey, but she's called Dr. Re') instead of him. I like her a lot, she's a sweet lady and a good vet. I found out that she's the one who made the cast of Ginger's paw print (I had assumed that the cremation place had done it) on the morning three weeks ago today when we had Ginger put to sleep. We both teared up and she asked if she could hug me. Of course I said yes, social distancing be damned. (We were both wearing masks, though). I told her how much that paw print means to me and thanked her for doing it. I also brought along some super expensive heart medication that Ginger only took a few days' worth of, and asked her if she could give it to another client. She offered to refund our account for it. I told her no, that I didn't care about the money, but that I'd feel good if she could give it to another dog owner who could use a month's break on the price of treating their dog's heart disease. Dr. Re' teared up again and told me that she would be glad to do that for us. So that made me feel good.

I finally made it home after that and I'm sitting here unwinding with a gin and tonic. Of course, that's probably going to make me even more tired, but I don't care. It's been a long day and a long week. Actually, scratch that, it's been a long few months! I'm ready to see 2020 out, folks. How about you?

Hope you're all having a good week.

  1. Heart worm is no joke up here where it snows, either. All our dogs have been treated. Since I've been away from dogs a few years now, I didn't know prevention is a shot away. That's good.
Glad you made it through the first week.It will be the longest week of the year.

  2. That first week back at work is always hard. It will be better next week. Enjoy your gin and tonic over the long weekend and try to de-stress.

  3. Ah, so you like your gin and tonic to huh?!?!?!

I was wondering how things with school were going. Two schools, here, and Temple University have both cut in person classes for the rest of the year due to rising infections. Like no one saw that coming. DUH! All back to online. Stay safe!!!!!!

  4. It's good to have this week finished and to have George's vet appointment taken care of too. Rest up and enjoy the weekend. I'm with you on 2020, it sucks.

  5. That was good of you to donate the medication. Someone and their dog will truly benefit from that kind gesture.

  6. No wonder you are so tired, what with all you had to go through recently; the heat doesn't help, either! Now that you are getting back into your (more or less normal) work routine, I suppose the extreme tiredness will gradually go away.
Your vets are wonderful, and I am glad you hugged - it's not hugging that spreads the virus, as long as people do not breathe into each other's faces or kiss, which you were probably not doing!
When my last cat died, I also took what was left of her heart medication (it was a lot, too) back to the vets. I must admit I did not even think of donating it but was very glad of the refund back then.

  8. That was a lovely thing you did with the medication and I have the impression that Dr Re will honour your request. I am already a little apprehensive about 2021. Will it be any better?

  10. Dave and I were just talking today about how hard it is to start work again -- I don't know if it's the stress and uncertainty of the pandemic or just going back after such a long break! I'm glad you thought to contribute the medicine to someone who might be able to use it. And I hadn't heard of that heartworm shot -- that's great to know! Here in the UK we have treatments for lungworm, and I've never been sure whether it's the same thing or not. (I suppose I could get off my lazy butt and look it up!)

  11. Hope you can rest up this long weekend. Accumulated stress is probably kicking you in the tush. And let's face it, going back to work is doubly hard with all the changes involved in schooling.
Hope George's itching calms down now he's had his allergy shot. And good job passing on the dog meds for someone else who may need a break. We could all use a break these days. One way or another.

  12. I did a lot of research on heartworms and you're right, you are in a really big hotspot. UP here where I live, it's more of an occasional nuisance. What kind of gin? I used to drink a lot of Tanqueray.

  13. You have had a load of stress,it will take awhile for your energy to come back. Give George a big hug from us.

  14. I find that my ability to cope with anything is severely reduced in hot, sticky weather and you've had a few things to cope with!

  15. Oh my goodness to much stress and then so much sadness over Ginger. No wonder you are tired. Hug George for us.

  16. That is so sweet you passed along the heart medication to someone who perhaps couldn't afford it for their dog. Here in my area of California apparently we don't have many heartworm cases, but my vet wants Bounce to have the medication. Bounce hates shots so I give him the medication in treat form once a month. We are in a heat wave here plus smoke from nearby fires and I tell people I melt in heat. I am going to have iced tea and later a cold beer. Enjoy your gin and tonic, it sounds well deserved and refreshing.

  17. a gin and tonic sounds quite capital. What sort of gin ?

  18. Good to hear that you survived the first two weeks. Our teacher workweek was last week, and I was exhausted after each day. Totally and completely wiped out. I haven't been checking any blogs I read, but I thought I would check yours to see how you've fared going back to school. I hope that no one in your school community gets Covid. Stay healthy.
