Here it comes!

Yesterday afternoon our next door neighbor on the right, Heather, had a landscaping company out to do some work on her property. There used to be a nasty, thorny, wild hedge between our yards that kept coming back and needed to be dug out by the roots, as well as some large shrubs that needed pruning. There was also a big dead tree right beside our driveway that we worried was going to fall on our house or cars one day. Heather had been worried about it too, apparently, so she asked the landscapers if they could cut it down while they were out there doing the other work.

I happened to be watching out of the window in the den when they started preparing to take down the tree. Three young guys wrapped a big chain around the trunk of the tree and braced themselves to pull it down in the direction they wanted it to fall while a fourth went to sawing at the other side with a very small chain saw.

I turned to my husband. "This looks like a straight up, good ol' boy, hold my beer y'all kind of operation to me."  We both laughed.

Then approximately ten seconds later I found myself gasping, "HERE IT COMES!!!" as this was happening:

Nice work, fellas.

  1. My apologies, but I had to laugh. They evidently didn't know you need to make a V cut in the direction you want the tree to fall. I had a large cherry tree take out most of the fence once, and my home owner's ins paid to have it replaced.

    1. Once we saw that the fence was the only real casualty, we laughed about it. Heather's having the fence repaired later this week.

  2. Well, I had no idea they were there to take out the fence, too. Nice work, fellas!!!

    1. From inside the house I heard one of the guys going, "OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT!" right after it fell. LOL.

    1. Actually, the pomegranate tree in the large planter got damaged. Three of the main branches were broken off and I nearly cried. It will survive, but it won't be beautiful again this year. I felt worse about that than the fence!

  4. If they're professional, they're imressive.

  5. Oh my! Luckily we've had real professionals take down a tree and our fence survived! Sorry about your fence. I think those "professionals" should pay for the repair!

    1. They will pay for the repair; they're licensed and insured for accidents. Someone is coming over Saturday to take care of it.

  6. I don't think I'll hire them, as I prefer that my fence remain intact.

  7. The last time we had a dead tree taken down, the man climbed to the top and cut it down bit by bit. No damage!

    1. Thank goodness they didn't attempt to climb the tree! Somebody would have probably gotten hurt!

  8. Is that also a dead tree in front of the house? Was that removed as well? Tree surgeons seem to be very variable in terms of skills and experience....

    1. That dead tree you see in the photo is the bottom part of the one they cut down. They had to finish cutting the bottom afterwards.

  9. Earlier this spring, after having a very large tree successfully (and professionally) taken down next to our fence, we left the bottom portion of a dead tree beside it standing because it had several woodpecker nests in it. So much for our good deed. Within weeks a windstorm came through and knocked down not only the dead tree but two sections of our fence. Woodpeckers moved over to another tree. Mother Nature is every bit as (in)competent as that beer-swilling crew when it comes to a tidy clean up. Glad the damage didn't reach your house.

    1. To be fair, they didn't look like beer swilling types. They were all pretty young and obviously didn't know much about removing trees. You never saw such sheepish guys as them when we walked outside to survey the damage!

  10. Proof that landscape guys are not what you might call certified arborists.
    Dang.

  11. Oh no! I hope they're going to pay to replace your fence! (I see in your comment above that that's the plan.)

Once my brother and I toppled a tree in my Mom's yard and it did the same thing -- came down in exactly the direction we DIDN'T want it to go. Once they start falling you can't do a darn thing.
