Doing my bit

I had big plans for being politically active this election season. Then the pandemic hit.

I'm a member of a local political action group and have been since 2016, but this year I haven't attended a single meeting or event. Several of my close friends are members of other groups--the League of Women Voters, the local Democratic Party, etc. They're all very politically active and I admire the amount of work they put into the issues near to their hearts. I had hoped that this would be a busy fall for me with the election looming, but with Covid hanging over our heads I just didn't feel comfortable having too much contact with the public (such as working at voter registration drives). Nor has there been any extra money to contribute to campaigns this year. And with all the civil unrest and violence these days my husband is dead set against me attending any marches or rallies. He's afraid something might happen to me and I respect that. Still, I felt guilty about sitting around doing nothing when things are so bad.

But then my friend Karen asked me for help with something I could do--help her address and send out postcards to registered voters in South Carolina for the Jaime Harrison campaign. He's running a surprisingly tight race to unseat our loathsome Senator Lindsey Graham. Karen was willing to have the postcards made and to pay for the postage, but she had hundreds of them to do and was overwhelmed with the work of addressing them all. So our friend Marian and I both volunteered to help her out. I've been working on them for the past two afternoons, adding a quick, personal, and positive note to each and every one of them:

It's not much, but it's better than nothing at all.

Go Jaime!!

  1. I have been following the race in SC. I so hope that Lindsey Graham loses. The ads by the Lincoln Project against him have been perfect. Yes, go Jaime!

    1. Hi Michael! Lindsey Graham is the WORST. I hope we can oust him. He's been on Fox news begging for money because Jaime Harrison is kicking his ass on fundraising.

  2. Thank you for being a true American! Every bit helps! I saw several clips of the debate between Harrison and Graham Cracker, one spoke about hope and the future, the other pointed dirty fingers. Wonder what Lindsey will do when he gets fired.

  3. Jennifer, it's a lot, and thank you. I've done this before. People mention it. And Graham needs to lose.

  5. Good luck to him. I used to work with my local member of parliament in the UK. He was a wonderful man, and luckily always won.

    1. Miss Lindseybelle would probably enjoy that. After all, he's already whored himself out to Trump.

  9. I agree with your husband. This election could get very nasty on the streets.

  11. Thank you so much for doing this! It is so important and I hope your state will vote out Graham. So many of those old Republicans have surprised me by not speaking out when Trump has done and said outrageous things. I've been so disappointed in them. Yay for you!

    1. Lindsey Graham is a weasley, whining, hypercritical, lying embarrassment to this state without one ounce of integrity. I want to see him gone.

  13. It IS much. Those personalised postcards are wonderful. People often talk about how much it means to receive them; it reminds them they're a part of something and not alone. Well done! (And thanks!)

  15. I have never been politically active, but I admire everyone who is. With the pandemic and the overall situation in your country, I am not surprised Gregg is set against you joining any marches, and that you have not attended any events - it is the reasonable thing to do, really. Have there been no online/virtual events/activities organised, things you could have joined from the safety of your own home with no risk of infection or violence?
Addressing hundreds of postcards is no mean feat, let alone adding a personal message. Well done, you!

    1. Things are getting worse and worse here. Everyone's nerves are strained to the breaking point about this upcoming election. Time to hunker down and ride out the storm, I think. I'm dreading November.

  16. I like your handwriting style. It's free flowing and literate. I applaud you for doing your little bit to unseat the lunatic in The White House and let's hope that intelligent, fair-minded voters in South Carolina manage to throw out Graham too.

  17. Good for you! I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but with all of the problems with mail in ballots, fake ballot boxes, closed polling stations, etc., I'm still fearful.
