Flying by

I can hardly believe it's already the first of July. The summer is flying by, which makes me a little bit sad. It will be over and done before we know it.

One of our neighbors put out this Pride flag at the beginning of June. It makes us smile every time we walk past their house with George. We don't know the people that live there, but we'd probably be friends.

I'm supposed to go back to work on the 26th, and guess what? I got a summons for jury duty on that day! I've never had jury duty despite being registered to vote since I was 18 years old. From what I understand, I'll appear in court that day and the attorneys will decide whether or not they want me to serve. So I might or might not end up missing more than the first day of school.

If I end up missing the first week, that's fine by me. The students don't come back until August 2nd, so most of that first week in the office will be spent helping with all the last minute registrations and answering hundreds of phone calls. Not a fun time. And for the first time I'm apprehensive about going back to work this year; some serious problems had developed that didn't get resolved before we left for the summer. I need to have a meeting with the principal early on so we can work some things out. The stress was starting to get to me at the end of last year. I didn't even realize how stressed out I was until I had a couple of weeks off and saw what a difference it's made.

But enough about that! I still have three and a half weeks off before I have to worry about going back to work. I'm really enjoying my summer and trying make the most of it. Speaking of which, here's the master of finding a moment of zen on a summer's day:

Porch naps in the sunshine! What could be better?

  1. I love to see people displaying pride flags too! Enjoy your jury duty selection process -- I'm nerdy enough to think that's cool.

    1. I'm excited about it, since it's a new experience for me. I hope I get picked, so I guess that makes me nerdy, too. :)

  2. Two wonderful photos. And not another mention of that “W” word.

    1. You're absolutely right! The evil word won't cross my lips (or my typing fingers) again in the next few weeks.

  3. It always surprises me to hear school going back at the beginning of August (we are September). Maybe you will end up finding a different job so you won't have to deal with working things out and being stressed out. -Jenn

    1. We're going back super early because our district has adopted a modified "year round" schedule. Going back this early will allow for a week off in early October and another week off in February that we wouldn't ordinarily have.

If I find another job, it will be in the same school district but at either a different school or the district office. Unless something dramatic happens I plan to stay with the district until I retire. The state benefits are nice and I'll have a small pension.

  4. I remember how stressed you felt at the end of the school year. You do sound so much more relaxed now that you have weeks off to garden and unwind. Good idea to meet with the principal before school gets busy again. Good luck with jury duty.

    1. I was very stressed, and I don't want that to be the way things go next year! I'm hoping for better days ahead!

  5. Wow, you sure go back early. I read your comment above and I realized that you have a different sort of calendar. I go back on the 16th of August, the day before my birthday! We normally go back after Labor Day, but the county changed the calendar this year. I got out of jury duty this year. I was summoned to appear and I asked to get out of it because it was in the middle of my cancer treatments!

    1. That's a good excuse to skip jury duty!

I'm glad you still have lots of time off to look forward to. Enjoy!

  7. I have been called for jury duty so many times that I've lost count. Take something to read because you'll spend a large amount of time waiting whether you get on a jury or not. I did think it was interesting.

I love the porch nap. Dogs and cats are masters of zen!

    1. Almost everyone I know has been called for jury duty multiple times. I'm not sure how I've been overlooked all these years!

  8. My next door neighbor has a Pride flag out, and I'd like to arrange to have something on the exterior of my house so I can fly one. I have a framed rainbow flag in my living room. I'm holding my breath for your return to work. It's obvious that the principal and some other staff members are a problem.

    Love,
    Janie

I hope your reconciliation meeting with the principle is successful.

    1. The principal and I get along fine and I'm sure we can work some of the issues out. There just wasn't much time at the end of last year and the entire staff was under lots of pressure which made putting off a discussion the prudent thing to do.

  10. If you are selected for jury duty then other admin colleagues will have to do your work! What a shame for them! I'm tempted to chortle like Father Christmas coming down a chimney: Ho-Ho-Ho! But Little P will miss you.

    1. Ho ho ho!!! You are right! And I'll admit I'm petty enough to have already thought of it. It would absolutely serve them right!

Also, I won't be seeing Little P. that first week anyway. Students in our district don't come back to school until the week after teachers and staff.

  11. I was called for jury duty many years ago, but the date was for a week after I was due to have my first baby...they let me off!
My husband did a stint a couple of years ago. He was there for2/3 weeks and it was a teenage stabbing/killing. A friend did it some years ago and the case was regarding a murder where various body parts were found scattered around the country.....gruesome photos to look at!

    1. Oh my. I hope that (if I do get chosen to serve) it's nothing quite as dramatic as that.

    2. Jennifer, you won't believe this, but I have just received a summons for jury service today in the post!!! I am not happy about it as I am committed to looking after my friend's dog during the time. I can say I can't do it at that time and give different dates that I could start but just hope they will let me do it later!

  12. I've done jury service twice in London. It was a really interesting experience, though also a very sobering one as you're holding someone's future in your hands - it's up to you to find them guilty or not guilty, to set them free or get them jailed. Good luck with being a juror. And good luck too with sorting out your work problems.

  14. Don't know whether to hope you get selected for jury duty or not. I was selected several years ago...an attempted murder. Let's just say it is more stressful than one might imagine when it comes to making a decision that will impact lives of others for years to come. Trial took about a week. Best of luck, however it turns out. Sure hope the work life improves or a better job comes along.

    1. Whew! As I just mentioned in a comment above, I hope it's not a case as serious as all that. And if it is, I hope they don't pick me after all.

  15. My first impulse was very similar to what Neil wrote - if you are selceted for jury duty, someone else will have to do their own work instead of waiting for you to do it for them!
I think I would like to serve on a jury, too; I know I enjoyed being part of the democratic process when I was helping with the election here in March.

    1. Yes, as I told Neil, I've already thought of how some of the others will have to do MY work for a change! And during the week before the students return, which is always very hectic. The thought makes me smile, I won't deny it!

  16. Awwwww, George! So cute! You'll have to contrive to meet the neighbors with the Pride flag.

I hope you can sort things out with work. I think everyone was probably stressed out at the end of the school year, which contributed to the conflict. Maybe after a summer off the pressure will be lower overall!

  17. You have a good attitude about jury duty
Americans who boast about liberty and freedom yet bitch and weasel out of jury duty are not logical. I would be honored to serve but I get rejected.
