Lightning Bug

I love this extreme close up of a lightning bug (or firefly, if you're inclined to call them that instead). Most summer evenings we see dozens of these flying around the neighborhood. What odd little creatures!

Have a great Sunday evening, everyone.

  1. I would love to see those in our neighborhood. What a lovely insect. We called them fireflies when I grew up in Wisconsin, but sad to say, I've not seen them in our area of California.

  4. In German, we have something called glow worms, in spite of them not being worms at all but bugs. Probably the same or similar species to your lightning bugs. But they have become very rare; I have never seen them. My Mum remembers them from her childhood.

  6. We occasionally have glow worms which perform roughly the same trick.

  7. I've seen glow worms but never fireflies. They look so exotic.

  8. We called them lightening bugs in Northern Indiana where I grew up and they were plentiful. There were not many in New York State. I have not seen any in Central Florida.

  10. Thank you all for the comments! I wondered if some of my friends in other parts of the world had ever seen these cool little bugs! They're such a common part of summer twilight here that I think most people stop noticing them after they grow up. They're really beautiful when they signal to each other.

  11. I love lightening bugs. But we do not see them as much anymore.
On one trip to Japan my son and DIL took us to the Lightening Bug bridge in Japan.
Small bridge over a small stream with lots of green all around. The Kindergarten children take care of the bridge and have their drawing of the lighting bugs hanging up.
    It is wonderful.

    cheers, parsnip and thehamish
