Dog vs Storm

A line of fierce thunderstorms is headed our way. They say we're in for strong (40-60mph) winds, heavy rain, and the possibility of both hail and tornados. I don't mind at all; in fact, I kind of enjoy big storms, provided no one gets hurt and there's no real damage. Our dog Ginger, on the other hand, hates bad weather and will go curl up in a corner of the laundry room and refuse to move if it even rains hard. We hate knowing she's scared....but we may have found a way to help her!

The owner of the pet store where Gregg works went to a trade show in Atlanta recently and brought back all kinds of freebies and samples. Among them are these treats that he gave Gregg to bring home for the dogs:

Active Ingredient: 4mg Phytocannabinoid Rich (PCR) Hemp Oil per chew.

That's right! Cannabis Chews for dogs! Apparently, it's the hot new trend in holistic dog care. Who knew?

If the storms that hit tonight are bad and Ginger gets scared, I'm going to try these out on her. Will she get stoned and mellow? Go to sleep? Get extra hungry for treats? All of the above? We shall see!!  I'll report back tomorrow in the comments, if you're curious.

Wish us luck!

  1. awwwwww Sweet Ginger I hope she will be ok.
Unless the thunder/lighting breaks over the house my dogs sleep through everything.

    cheers, parsnip

  2. It works for this human so I am sure it will work for Ginger. Definitely keep us posted!

  3. If she starts listening to Hendrix, you'll know they're working.

  4. Have you heard of " thunder shirts" for dogs? They wrap closely round and are supposed to keep the dog calm when frightened of noise etc. There is info online about how to tie a scarf around the dog to get the same effect. Not needed one for my dogs, but a friend says that it definitely helps one of hers ! Hope it might help. (According to one website, it helps 80% of dogs in a survey of 2000 customers...but then they are also trying to sell the shirts!!)

  5. It is so hard to watch our pets reaction to storms. I hope this works for Ginger and I can’t wait to read how she fared.

  6. I think that you should try out those chews before giving them to Ginger. After all, it's important to know that they work.

  7. Wow. I could use some of those chews abou now!

  8. Thanks for all the comments. Ginger seemed much more relaxed (even yawned and closed her eyes) than she usually is during a storm. I'm not sure if they worked, but they seemed to!
