After a terrible night, I'm happy to say that our a/c seems to be fixed. The guy that came out said that the compressor overheated and quit working. It's still not very cool in the house, but he said it will take a few hours to cool things back down again and to not turn the temperature down too low all at once--to try to drop the temp in the house a couple of degrees at a time so as not to overwhelm the works. Whatever, I'm just grateful cool air is coming out of the vents again. And we didn't have to pay anything even though the last time the a/c broke it was for a different issue.
Last night at about 1:30 in the morning we discovered that the portable a/c unit was leaking all over the rug in our den. We had to scramble to move furniture, get the rug up, mop up the water, etc. We ended up dragging an old plastic kiddie pool from the garage to put the unit inside of to protect the floors from leaking water. It must have been after 2am before we were finally able to (try to) sleep, and Gregg had to get up early for work. The house is in disarray still, but I'm exhausted from 2 nights of hardly getting any sleep. I'll have to deal with all that after a good nap.
I'm so happy to hear that things are better with your AC. I've been worried!
ReplyDeleteBut that sure sucks about the window unit. Geez.
Oh My Goodness !
ReplyDeleteJust happy to know your AC is fixed for now.
parsnip
Glad to hear things are working again. I don't know how we survived with just fans when I was little.
ReplyDeleteGood grief, when it rains, it pours. Glad the AC is working again. I hope it stays working...we still have some hot days ahead of us.
ReplyDeleteIt cooled off dramatically outside yesterday evening when a big line of thunderstorms moved through. Today is almost 20 degrees cooler than it's been in weeks so we're hoping the repair is good and not merely a matter of cooler temps outside.....we're paranoid now! As you say, we have lots of hot weather still ahead.
DeleteI hope you took a nap in your now cool home.
ReplyDeleteI never got a nap, but boy did I sleep like a log when I went to bed at 10pm!
Deleteholy shitsnax! how are the puppies and marco with all that heat? hope you got plenty of rest today.
ReplyDeleteThe puppies hung out with us in the den where we had the portable a/c. Marco was in a smaller cage in the kitchen, which opens out to the den and was a little cooler than the room he normally lives in. And thank goodness we have ceiling fans in almost every room of the house so that helped, too.
DeleteSing along: "Summertime and the living is easy..."
ReplyDeletePoor you! I know what it is like trying to get through your days with hardly any sleep at night; heat on its own I can handle, but noisy neighbours, police helicopters and other things more often than not keep me awake.
ReplyDeleteWhen it rains it pours.. or something like that!
ReplyDeleteGood grief! Craziness! I don’t think your compressor should be overheating. Doesn’t that suggest some deeper issue? (Not that I’m any kind of expert.)
ReplyDeleteI asked the guy why the compressor overheated....and he said, "110 degrees outside and a 30 year old unit". We're going to have to replace the HVAC before long. We're just trying to get through this first summer at least before we do it.
DeleteAnd it had better stay fixed this time. Tell it I've issued a threat and will follow through with some pretty painful stuff if it breaks again.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
