It's always something.

This weekend has brought the most wonderful fall weather we've seen so far. The temperatures are in the upper 40's at night and the mid 70's during the day, just perfect. It's so nice to be outside.

The dogs think so, too. Poppy loves spending time outdoors, but George has preferred the air-conditioned house all summer and would rarely venture past the back porch while it was so hot. All that changed on Friday afternoon. It felt so good outside that George actually went out into the back yard with Poppy and wanted to play! They ran and wrestled and acted like two puppies together. We were amused, watching their antics, and happy to see George being so active.

Well. Turns out, we should have discouraged George's boisterousness. He rounded a corner running at full speed, stumbled slightly, and let out a small yelp. He's been limping ever since. Martina came over the next morning to have a look at him (she's a vet tech) and she thinks there's a strong possibility that he ruptured his cruciate ligament. It's common among bully breeds because of the way their knees and hips are built.

We had some pain/inflammation medication for dogs on hand, thank goodness, so I've been giving him a dose each morning. He's getting around fairly well, but he puts very little weight on that one back leg. I'll be taking him to the vet when I get off work tomorrow afternoon. Worst case scenario (if it's a complete tear of that ligament) is that he may need surgery. I dread the idea of that! My poor Georgie.

Please send all your best positive thoughts for a much less serious diagnosis when he sees the vet tomorrow! Any dog owners out there who have dealt with these kinds of issues? I'd love to hear about it if you have.

  1. Oh, poor George! I hope whatever the problem is, it will heal on its own.

  2. Poor little rambunctious George -- I hope it's not a complete tear.

  3. Dogs, not unlike humans, often just need some time to heal. I hope this is the case with dear George.

  4. Just like kids they don't remember to watch their rambunctious time!!! But amazing how dogs can tolerate injury and heal. They seem to know what to do till they need help. He sure doesn't look in pain in that picture.

And I agree with the weather too. It's been about the same here. But I use very little air in the summer, open windows usually...but at night lately, sleeping has been so good and very heavy I might add.

  6. My dogs get what I call 'boo boo paw' where they will favor a paw, always one of the front ones. It usually goes away in a day. Hope Georgie's feeling better soon.

  8. Poor boy, I see this all the time with dogs tearing about after each other. Billy often limps after a crash, and one of his friends recently did the same. Luckily the pain is usually short-lived.

  9. Do vets cost as much in US as they do here? I have just spent £1,200.00 on my boy! He had needle biopsy on 3 lumps and then had them removed last Friday. He isn't insured, so he is paying for it out of his own account ! I set up a " puppy fund" before we even had him and started putting money in from the savings from reducing the insurance payments for the old dog, and money from selling some old gold. I still add £25 per month.
I hope that George will be ok and doesn't need an op.

  10. I send him all the good thoughts possible. My daughter has a dog like this, very similar to him and it happens to her often too. She's limping and it passes somehow.

  13. Hopefully he just pulled a muscle and after a spell of rest he'll recover. This is called wishful thinking.

    1. Like Frances, I have noticed that Hurricane Ian is heading in your general direction. I am hoping that it will track just west of Florence and that you, Gregg, George, Poppy and Marco are all safe. See you on the other side.
