I woke up early this Thanksgiving morning, poured a cup of coffee, and stood looking out of the front windows. And what to my wondering eyes should appear....but a wild turkey running down our street! And no, I wasn't day drinking (yet) but I did do a double and then triple take!
I'd heard a couple of reports of a half tame female turkey hanging around the next neighborhood over, but never expected it (her?) to show up over here....and certainly not on Thanksgiving!
She was still hanging around an hour or so later, so I drove around the block and made a video of her from my car window for proof that it happened.
Happy Thanksgiving!
A lovely specimen. Thanks for the video.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness she wasn't like the ones in Woburn, MA.

Hope you & yours had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
I have had in the past three years a Tom turkey and two of his hens, come feed at my birdfeeder droppings and eat the seed I throw on my patio outside my kitchen doorwall for the chipmonks and squirrels. Then they roost on the fence that surrounds my small enclosed veggie garden. He is quite the fellow when in full blown state when he believes his ladies are threatened. I live in a small town about a city block from a main thoroughfare.
ReplyDeleteVery nice, though keep in mind turkey's can be very aggressive; one of the reasons Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird.
ReplyDeleteShe is probably running around tell you all, Look, you didn't get me." She probably shouldn't tempt her fate. I love them too. I miss the ones I used to see up at the lake near my old house. It wasn't uncommon to see many of them running around on the backroads in Bucks County.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a tame bird. Do they usually wander around looking at people?
ReplyDeleteLOL -- it looks like she's moving her head in rhythm with your Sly & the Family Stone! Doesn't she realize yesterday was NOT the day to be wandering around in the open?!
ReplyDeleteIn this country, turkeys are not native birds and only exist on farms. We sometimes come across them on pastures on the outskirts of a village, but I have obviously never seen one in the wild.
ReplyDeleteTo spot this one on Thanksgiving morning was truly special!
Poor girl. She was trying to figure out where all her friends went.
ReplyDeletethink maybe she escaped a certain death from a dinner???
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet sighting! I used to see more of them in a Tallahassee neighborhood we lived in than I do here in Lloyd. Weird. They are fascinating birds.
ReplyDeleteThat turkey was probably shrieking, I GOT AWAY!
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I enjoyed the radio music playing in the background. Sly and the Family Stone were one of my favorite groups! "We got to live together!!... I am everyday people"
ReplyDeleteGreat turkey video - perfect for Thanksgiving, Jennifer!
Looks like a wild turkey. Here in Maine they were re-introduced about 20 years ago and have become thorough pests. They roam in packs, are too dumb to get out of the road when beeped at, and invade farmers' grain stores. They can be hunted in the spring and fall, but it wouldn't hurt anyone's feelings if the season were extended.
ReplyDeleteWhat is it they say - Turkey's don't vote for Xmas... and I guess for Thanksgiving either!
ReplyDeleteI’d love to come for thanksgiving
ReplyDeleteWith a kiss from marco
That turkey was risking her neck, strutting around so audaciously at Thanksgiving! Mind you, I guess a turkey's brain is the size of a small strawberry... A quick check on Google tells me it is actually the size of a pea! so I guess it must be a Trump supporter!
ReplyDeleteThat was one gutsy turkey, strutting in people's front yards on Thanksgiving day. We were driving down the road, and Tim commented that he'd seen two turkeys crossing the road, right here and I pointed to a yard and said, "Was it one of those, do you think?" A flock of them were scratching around in a yard. It made us laugh.
ReplyDeleteI am thankful for having you in my life.
ReplyDeleteJennifer, that was a sight to see... he'd better be careful or someone will be eating him. Some years ago I looked out my window and saw a pig running across my neighbors yard. In town and who in the dickens had pigs? That was fun.
