It seems I have a "Thanksgiving cactus" instead of a "Christmas cactus" like I originally thought.
Whatever you call it, it's nice to have flowers blooming in the house to brighten these dark November days. The colors glow in the morning sun from a south-facing window.
Beautiful! I was given the gift of a Christmas cactus that is over 50 years old. I know nothing about them. I have it in our front window where it gets lots of sun. How often do you water yours?
I remember my Grandma having one, but I can‘t recall whether it was in bloom around Christmas or another time of year. Yours is really a splash of colour, just what you want in November.
Christmas or Thanksgiving Cactus are similar but leaf shape. I also have/ had Easter one. blooms somewhat difference. I bet yours will keep blooming through and after Christmas. My white one is blooming like crazy now somewhat early I think. I always think Christmas ones are white, pink and red the colors of Christmas. Yours is so beautiful.
Mine never blooms like that! I think I have it in the wrong location but don't have many sunny spots to put it in my home. Thanks for sharing your pretty plant!
Not all that often. Mine spent the summer on the screened porch, and only came inside in late September. I only watered it every now and then, and to be honest, it got a little too dry a few times....but that seems to be preferable to too wet. I did give it a good watering when the flower buds appeared, and that's when it burst into bloom.
So, to sum it up: benign neglect seems to be key. :)
Steve from Shadows and Light mentioned a difference between "Thanksgiving" and "Christmas" cactus. Hopefully mine will be like yours and will bloom for the next several weeks.
Thank you Sue. All the plants we had to squeeze in front of that window (most spent the summer out on the porch) really add some cheer to our den. All that green, and now, these flowers. I'm hoping the orchids pop off next.
They seem to be for sale everywhere this time of year. I considered buying a couple of new ones at the grocery store! So get yourself some, woman. Just do it!
Do try again! I mean, I keep reminding myself of a quote I saw somewhere: "They're plants, not puppies. It's not the end of the world if they die." That was a game changer for me. It's just a plant!

We have so many plants clustered in that window, because it gets the best sun in the whole house. All of a sudden I want more of these cactus, but I don't know where I think I'll put them! Space is at a premium now that it's too cold for the porch.
I went to a Christmas party with my book club a few years ago and saw the biggest, most gorgeous specimen! It was probably 2 feet in diameter and full of blooms. I'd love to have a really nice one like that.

The flowers are glowing, nice capture by you in the photo. Those plants sometimes live for decades, maybe I will try growing one again.
I have had them in the past, and they were always deep red. Maybe that's the difference between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
I like the angle of that photo because it shows off the way the southern sun illuminates the blooms.

That's a pretty one -- very red, it looks like. Frances mentioned the shape of the leaves, and that's what I learned too. (Possibly from her!)
