Speaking of which, Monday is Memorial Day, so we have a three-day weekend. It's a very welcome break for the school after two weeks of state testing, award days with families coming and going, and grade level end-of-the-year parties. That last thing, the parties, has only been stressful for me, by the way. Every grade level (5K through 5th) at our school has themed parties at the end of the year, and food and drinks and decorations and games don't just magically appear! :) It's always a bit stressful for me, making sure requisitions to pay for everything get submitted in time, placing orders, dealing with vendor issues, etc. I'm always afraid I'm going to miss something, drop the ball somewhere, and who wants to let a bunch of little kids down? But I try to be conscientious in my work, and things have been smooth so far (knock wood). Next Friday is the last day of school for students, so things will be a lot more relaxed at work after that.
I'm going to a birthday party this afternoon! Marla's little girl has turned 7 years old, and I'm invited to the family party. I hear there'll be a taco bar! And cake, of course. It should be fun.
One last thing: I picked my first vegetables from the garden on Friday! I had a wonderful salad with my dinner last night.
I love the comment about how school will be quieter after the students leave! They really complicate things😉
ReplyDeleteLOL! To be fair, I'm looking forward to the teachers leaving too!!!!
DeleteHow do you cook your miscellany and do you prefer it with ice cream or custard? In spite of the recent busy-ness at the school, life seems pretty good for you right now Jennifer.
ReplyDeleteOverall, life is pretty good right now. I'm thankful.
DeleteI like how you composed that shot of the veggies!
ReplyDeleteI kept fiddling with it to get it just right! Thanks for noticing! LOL
DeleteLovely, fresh, home-grown food.
ReplyDeleteThe lettuce is crisp and delicious!
DeleteI'm glad all of the end of school parties went well - thanks to your great work! Well done, Jennifer! Soon you can relax a bit and I hope you enjoy your summer.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Summer hours will only be 22 hours per week, with Fridays off...I love it. It's relaxing and low key.
DeleteI don't envy you having to shepherd those party expenses through the payment process. But I am with you on the pleasures of the early mornings! Olga gets me up every day somewhere around 5 a.m., which is not my optimal time for getting up -- but when she sees the sun, she's ready. Thank god for coffee. :)
ReplyDeleteYes, and getting shopping lists from teachers this time of year is like pulling teeth (they're busy) and making sure the orders get placed in time is the biggest issue. Then there's the fact that half of them want to place orders with Amazon, which requires prior approval from the superintendent...all this along with my regular day-to-day work can be a lot. Thank goodness it's almost all done!
DeleteI am mad-jealous ! Not only for the garden goodies but for the cool, gray, rainy Sunday. Taco bar! That was my very first party I gave in my teen years.
ReplyDeleteThat weather came on the heels of a week of unseasonably hot weather (for May) and was a welcome relief.
DeleteI believe we may be growing the same type of cucumbers!
ReplyDeleteI bet you are the MOST conscientious person in your position who has ever worked at that school.
Boston Pickling? :) They're my favorite.
DeleteI don't know about that, but I love my job and try hard to do it well so no one will have any complaints about me. I may end up retiring from this school if all goes well.
Your bounty looks delish and so fresh!
ReplyDeleteAs for me, I pay respects for our veterans...but this will be the first time in years I won't be placing any flags up sadly. I was mixed on it, but I just couldn't. I hope you enjoy the Memorial!
I understand that, Maddie. It's no disrespect to the veterans to be sad and appalled at what's happening in our country. They (and all of us) deserve better.
DeleteLove the fruits, er, the veggies, of your labors!!
ReplyDeleteThanks! The few fruits of my labors (the handful of blueberries and figs our young bushes/trees are producing so far) are being raided by birds. Sigh.
DeleteA busy time. Oh, those vegs! I envy you.
ReplyDeleteMore lettuce and cucumbers were picked yesterday, along with a handful of green beans. The harvest is beginning!
DeleteThe school year appears to end very early for the students at your school. Here, it is usually July or even August, depending on which federal state one is in, since the states are on a rota with their summer holidays so that not all of Germany are off school at the same time, which would make traffic on roads and rails even heavier than usual.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your first havest of the season!
And Carson turning seven is almost unbelievable.
That's interesting...I didn't know that Germany staggered the timing of student breaks. That's so clever and practical. Your government seems efficient and well-run compared to ours...it's the damn Wild West here.
DeleteCarsen is growing up fast.
Sorry for having spelled Carsen‘s name wrongly.
DeleteI honestly didn't notice!
DeleteSchool is so much better when the students aren’t there. Beautiful salad ingredients.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Actually, the school is better when the students AND TEACHERS aren't there! It will only be me, the principal, and the custodians during most of the summer.
DeleteI'm struck by how elaborate all these school celebrations seem to have become. I think on the last day of school we took our peanut butter and tuna fish sandwiches and little milk cartons outside to eat at lunchtime and that was it. We thought it was pretty exciting! Of course, the PB&J being allowed tells you how long ago that was.
ReplyDeleteAll of our grades (5K-5th) have individual accounts so that when a student pays for a field trip or activity, it goes into the correct "bucket" to pay for things. Almost all the grades have money left over, so they're spending some of it for end of the year celebrations. Plus the three upper grades just finished state testing late last week and everyone (kids and staff) are tired and just...DONE. :)
DeleteI am so anxious for tomato season! On the last day of school, our bus driver bought us ice cream on the way home. I do not remember ever celebrating in school.
ReplyDeleteWe're eager for our first homegrown tomatoes, for sure. I don't remember bus drivers giving us treats when I was a kid! That was awfully nice. When I was growing up, high school seniors drove the school buses...I shake my head at the very thought these days!
DeleteI wished you lived closer you sweep the board at the flower and produce show
ReplyDeleteOh, how I wish, John! We'd have so much fun! Maybe I'll make it to Wales someday. :)
