Last week I picked my first (non-cherry) tomato of the year. I'd planned to let it ripen on the vine a little more, but a day or two of heavy rain was predicted and I was afraid it would split. Once a tomato is at least half ripe, finishing it on the countertop doesn't hurt anything, but a rain-split tomato is pretty much ruined, in my opinion.
Y'all...this tomato was kind of freaky! Too bad John's not still having the Novelty Veg Competition, because my first tomato was a Strange Bird. :)
I posted this picture on Facebook, and a guy I went to
high school with asked me if my bird had pollinated it. LOL!!
...and in the process, slice open my left thumb.
I couldn't believe I'd done this to myself again. Almost exactly two years ago I was cutting red peppers to add to a pasta salad, got careless, and nearly took off my left forefinger. It was a really bad cut that I probably should have gotten stitches for, and I've got a scar and some lingering numbness to this day.
This cut didn't turn out to be quite that bad, but it's still pretty bad. I bled and bled, all the while holding it tight under cold running water to try to stop the bleeding. Gregg ran for bandages and the dogs milled around my feet, nervous. Then, just like last time, I started to feel hot, and sick, and dizzy. I had to rush to the bedroom and lie down to keep from fainting.
Fun times!! Ha.
So anyway, back to the tomato. Once I started feeling okay again, I got up and insisted Gregg eat his supper even though I didn't feel like eating myself (understatement). I ended up covering my plate and putting it in the fridge, and there it still sits. It looks like I won't be trying that crazy tomato after all. Oh, well.
That's terrible! I hope it heals quickly and fully.
ReplyDeleteIt's not very big, thank goodness, just deep. It's not as bad as last time. Thank you!
DeleteI thought I was so smart and bought a wonderful set of kitchen knives. I have used one knife twice, both times ending in an episode like yours. I guess I am not old enough for real knives yet. I hope you are feeling better today and can enjoy your tomato.
ReplyDeleteSame! These knives were new when I cut myself last time. Apparently I'm not old enough for real knives, either!
DeleteOh dear, you are very wounded indeed. I can understand rushing to lie down after the Incident.
ReplyDeleteThese things happen so quickly. Hope you heal well.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll live. :)
DeleteIt makes you feel so annoyed with yourself. I recently stabbed myself with the point of a knife, and I was furious with myself all day.
ReplyDeleteYikes! I hope that wasn't too painful!
DeleteOuch!! Poor you! I know exactly how hot, dizzy and close to fainting this made you feel. When more than 20 years ago I cut my left forefinger on a shard of glass when trying to stuff more stuff into our rubbish bin, I had to lie down, too. And Steve, ever the Englishman, asked: "Shall I make you a cup of tea?"
ReplyDeleteI declined the offer but he cleaned up the kitchen which looked like the scene for a splatter movie, and that was just one little cut - small, but deep.
Congratulations on discovering a new species of bird! "Pomodorus barlow" will soon have its own article on wikipedia :-D
"Pomodorus barlow"!!!! I love that!
Delete"Shall I make you a cup of tea?" haha! That made me smile.
Oh you poor thing! I remember the last time. I think I told you then, that’s why I don’t cook. Much too dangerous. And, yes, that dizzy-sick feeling is no surprise. Hope it heels quickly. That parrot tomato is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteMuch too dangerous! Haha. I remember you saying that last time. :) Isn't the tomato funny?!
DeleteOoh, nasty! It takes just a moment of inattention to be followed by hours of self-recrimination. I hope it's not too sore now. It was a lovely tomato, though.
ReplyDeleteIt's a little sore, but not too bad. It's a deep cut, but not very big, and the location on my thumb isn't too bothersome. Thank you!
DeleteOh Jennifer! That sounds awful. I cut my finger years and years ago slicing something on Christmas Day. I didn't go to the ER, and I have a scar to remind me! I hope this heals quickly. Did Gregg mention how the tomato tasted? (That was one weird looking tomato!)
ReplyDeleteAs for the taste, see my reply to Bob below. It really was a weird looking tomato! I seem to regularly cut and burn myself in the kitchen, but usually not that bad. I've GOT to be more careful.
DeleteI find that I cut myself in the kitchen when I remind myself to be careful; it's like I'm willing it to happen .
ReplyDeleteHope you heal fine.
I love that Beak Tomato!!! Hopefully it was delicious.
I never tasted it. Gregg said it was okay. It's one of the hybrid determinates that I grew for volume, not necessarily taste. I have 9 heirlooms for taste!
DeleteAnyone who truly cooks is going to get cuts and burns. That's all there is to it. I have the scars to prove it and so do you.
ReplyDeleteTruth!
DeleteCertified American Red Cross Instructor here, applied pressure works so much better than cold water. I feel sorry for you. Haven't cut myself in years and always hate when it happens.
ReplyDeleteOh, I used both...tight pressure with the cold tap running over my hand. :)
DeleteYou know...was this Attack of the Killer Tomato?
ReplyDeleteIt sure felt like it at the time!
DeleteOnce I saw a Portuguese butcher at work. He was wearing a chainmail glove on his left hand. May I suggest that you invest in one - just in case?
ReplyDeleteDamn, that sounds like exactly what I need!
DeleteThey do make kevlar gloves. Maybe make the purchase while you still have 10 fingers, sistah.
DeleteOh no! It was the curse of the tomato bird! (Or bird tomato?) Sorry about your finger. Hope it's feeling better.
ReplyDeleteouch indeed.
ReplyDeleteOh, too bad, Jennifer! Hope it has healed up nicely. Be careful!!
ReplyDeleteWELL GOOD GRAVY MARIE WOMAN you do this every year. Simply go back, check your posts, and then don't do this next year. SHEESH
