It's wonderful to wake up to good political news for a change! I feel more hopeful than I have in months.
In today's newsletter Heather Cox Richardson summed it all up nicely:
Tonight the results came in. American voters have spoken. Democrat Abigail Spanberger won the governorship of Virginia by 15 points, becoming Virginia’s first female governor. Every single county in Virginia moved toward the Democrats, who appear to have picked up at least 12 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates. Democrat Mikie Sherrill won the governorship of New Jersey by more than ten points (the vote counts are still coming in as I write this). Pennsylvania voted to retain three state supreme court justices, preserving a 5–2 liberal majority on the court. Democrats in Georgia flipped two statewide seats for public service commissioners by double digits. Mississippi broke the Republican supermajority in the state senate. Maine voters rejected an attempt to restrict mail-in voting; Colorado voters chose to raise taxes on households with incomes over $300,000 to pay for meals for public school students. California voters approved Proposition 50 by a margin of about 2 to 1, making it hard for Trump to maintain the vote was illegitimate. And in New York City, voters elected Zohran Mamdani mayor. Tonight, legal scholar John Pfaff wrote: “Every race. It’s basically been every race. Governors. Mayors. Long-held [Republican] dog-catchers. School boards. Water boards. Flipped a dungeon master in a rural Iowa D&D club. State senators. State reps. A janitor in Duluth. State justices. Three [Republican] Uber drivers. Just everything.” Trump posted on social media: “‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’ according to Pollsters.” But in fact, today voters resoundingly rejected Trump and Trumpism, and tomorrow, politics will be a whole different game. © 2025 Heather Cox Richardson |

Glad to hear it! Keep waking up, America!
Good morning , indeed!
Happily surprised.
I'm happy but not surprised. I'm taking a personal victory lap, after working hard for these results and opposing miserable naysayers who said we were done for. Even the mainstream media is forced to concede! This Jersey girl is dancing!
A Great πππ Day!!!
He was on the ballot in a big way, he's just too stupidly arrogant to understand.
Yes, great news!
Such great news. It seems that the tide has turned on Trump unless of course he stages some kind of "event" that will win back his original base. Though he is an ignorant pig of a man, he will know that George W.Bush's ratings shot up in the immediate wake of 9/11.
Some good news at last. Well done, America.
Is that the scent of hope in the air?
Great news but I'm not as sanguine. I'm afraid that the GOP will find some way to restrict or deny the vote. Unlike last time, Trump has some evil geniuses who are running the show. I hope I'm wrong!
I didn't realize the wins were so comprehensive. I was only aware of the major races. Maybe Americans are finally waking up to the fact that billionaire oligarchs don't care about them or their egg prices, and instead just want to waltz in a flashy new White House ballroom?
MAGA is going to go down, sooner or later. Hopefully this is the start of it.
I drove to work with a lighter heart than I've had in ages.
I listened to a few minutes of conservative radio this afternoon (normally it makes my blood pressure shoot up immediately and I can't bear it) and even the loudest, nastiest liars sounded beaten and slightly chastened. GOOD!!!!
I'm so grateful to my fellow Americans who made this happen!
Blue Wave, Baby!!!!
Exactly. Exactly that.
It gives me hope for the midterms next year! Let's do this!
His power is waning. Not to mention that his health seems to be failing fast. I think his enablers will start to see the writing on the wall, and with the midterms coming up next year they'll be like rats trying to jump off the sinking ship. We'll see.
I'm proud of us! It's small, but it's a start.
Isn't it beautiful?!
The results were such landslides that there's no mention of contesting results. I actually listened to conservative talk radio on the way home today and they were subdued and making excuses for themselves.
Big wins in small elections in places like Mississippi and Georgia are very telling, I think. People are rising up against all the horror. And when we all stand together and vote, we can win.
I am very happy to hear this. Warm greetings from a retired lady living in Montreal, Canada ❤️π π¨π¦
It does feel brighter. My retired editor wrote, 'Even my morning coffee tastes better this morning.' Did you read Chrissy Houlahan's interruption of Mike Johnson's carefully crafted press conference? So well done.
Spring is coming! At least that's what it feels like, doesn't it.
Our main news were full of these results last night, too, and especially the new New York Mayor featured prominently.
Happy to be in town to witness this!
