George

This handsome boy is the newest member of our family. We named him George, after the awesome little terrier in the movie Bringing Up Baby. George came from a nearby shelter and was on the euthanasia list last week. I've been thinking of rescuing and adopting a second dog for months now, and when I found him on the shelter's website somehow I just knew he was the one. He's about a year old, but he still acts very much like a puppy. He is very, very sweet and playful. We brought him home on Friday the 13th, just in time for Christmas!

So far Ginger is accepting her new little brother with more good grace than I would have thought possible. I'm so proud of her! They've been playing together in the back yard in between naps, and Ginger has even been willing to share her big doggie bed with him. There have been only minor skirmishes and jockeying for position since George's arrival, for which I'm profoundly grateful. I think they're going to be good friends.

What a happy Christmas it's going to be for George and our family. Anyone who says you can't buy love has never paid an animal adoption fee!

  1. He looks wonderful. I'm sure they'll become the best of friends; all dogs like another to play with. Welcome home George!

  2. I am absolutely thrilled for you and your family (humans and canines alike)! What an awesome, truly important way by which to bring a second dog into your life (our cat Stella was a rescue pet as well).

Tons of hugs to darling George from both Annie (our 11 month old pup) and I,
    ♥ Jessica

*PS* Thank you very much for your touchingly lovely comment on Saturday's post.

    1. Kisses and hugs back to Annie and Stella from George (and Ginger).

I am a huge believer in rescuing (rather than buying or getting free) pets, since our area has to euthanize thousands of great animals every year. It's heartbreaking. The shelter where I adopted George recently got three separate litters of puppies, as well as 30 dogs that a mentally ill lady had been hoarding. They were already full to capacity before these things happened. If not for a big network of volunteers who will foster and/or pay for transport to rescues in the northeast, all of these animals would have had to be put down.

When I found out that George's adoption fee was reduced from $100 to $50 because he was on the "last chance" list, I went ahead and paid to sponsor another dog on the list. It feels nice to save two lives at Christmastime :)

  3. Jennifer saves a life, great news. We have a female and a male boxer, you can expect spats off and on. George probably didn't realize the gravity of his situation, but I'm sure he appreciates his new family. Blessings-X.

    1. George does indeed appreciate his new family, but he's still so very excited (when he's not dead asleep!) that it's been difficult to interact with him. He still acts very, very puppy-like. It's been kind of exhausting, for us AND Ginger. She's six years old, and sometimes his overgrown puppy antics exasperate her. LOL. :)

  4. Thank you all for the sweet comments! George is slowly settling in and we're all adjusting to all the changes and new routines. <3
I'll be posting a lot more pet photos in the near future!
