I got up this morning, poured myself a cup of coffee, and stood sipping it while looking out of the kitchen window. A spot of bright orange beside the driveway caught my eye, and it turned out to be a Tiger Lily! We've lived in this house for four summers now, but a few scattered daylilies are the only kind that ever bloomed here. Of course I ran and grabbed the camera.
This is actually a Turk's Caps Lily (Lilium superbum) but one of it's common names is the American Tiger Lily. That's the name I grew up with. They are a species of true lily, native to eastern and central North America, and are only available on a limited basis in nurseries. My grandma grew them a long time ago, but you rarely seem to see them these days. They've always been a particular favorite of mine.
I thought that after four years, I'd seen all of the flowers left over from the days when a little old lady owned the house. What a happy surprise this was to wake up to!
Phew..... not bad!
ReplyDeleteI love the vivid orange color--and the freckles!
DeleteI never thought about finding tiger lilies in a nursery - I guess I thought they were like their name, wild and untameable.
ReplyDeleteYou can order bulbs from some nurseries! :)
DeleteWhat a stunner!!! Oh my goodness, that is beautiful. The vintage gal in me wants to tuck it in my hair sooo badly, but of course I'd never plunk a gorgeous bloom like this when their faux variety can be had. How special that you get to enjoy a vibrant pumpkin hued tiger lily this summer.

*PS* Thank you deeply for your beautiful comment and birthday wishes today. I too know that we'd hit it off fabulously in person and like to think that maybe, just maybe, we'll get the chance to meet one day (Tony and I do dream of getting an RV and traveling across North America at some distant point in the future, so it could happen).
*PSS* How are you doing post-surgery? I've thought of you often, knowing how rough my own recovery and ensuing development of PCS was, and have been hoping dearly that you're doing worlds better on that front than I did,
I do hope we get to meet one day! Gregg and I would love to travel northward someday, so you just never know! You are always welcome if you travel to this area, and oh! how you would love Charleston, SC!!
DeleteI am doing GREAT post surgery! I feel sooo much better now with my gallbladder out! I have been very fortunate and have not had any negative side effects at all! Thanks for asking!
Happy Birthday, sweet lady!
Great pictures!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
