Inauguration Day

It's been a wonderful day! Congratulations, President Biden and Madam Vice President Harris!

I love both of these new families coming into the White House. The Bidens have endured so much loss, and yet they're a beautiful example of a family (not without their flaws) that love each other fiercely and unconditionally. They're all exceptionally close. And have you seen the way the new, first Second Gentleman looks at his wife? They, too, have a lovely, devoted, decent family. How refreshing.

On a related note, did you see the lone soldier kneeling by Beau Biden's grave at the moment his father was sworn in this morning? In his speech today President Biden said this about his son:

“Ladies and gentlemen, I only have one regret. He’s not here, because we should be introducing him as president.”

That made me cry, as did so many other moments today. As the swearing-in started, I poured myself a tiny little half glass of champagne to celebrate, even though technically I was working from home until 4:30. I had to wait until now to have a full glass! And as soon as Gregg gets home from work (late on Wednesdays) we'll have dinner and then I'm going to have a few drinks to celebrate!  It's the perfect occasion to get a little tipsy!

I'm so grateful that everything went off without a hitch today, that leaders of both parties (including the outgoing Vice President) behaved with dignity and decency towards our new President, and that we now have hope of healing and reconciliation. Onward and upward!

  4. I must admit I have become way too cynical over these past four/five years and was not even going to watch. I got up before the sun though, compelled to watch the entire thing by forces unknown. Rarely moved by speeches, pomp or ceremony, I certainly was this time. Dennis had to scrape me off of the floor.

  7. You had champagne, I went out and bought ice cream, Cherry Garcia. And it is great to have a president who's married to his wife, not some model / escort.

  10. By the time I was ready to sit down in front of the telly, it was 6:45 pm (live broadcast in Germany started at 6:00), and so I missed most of the important moments. But the speech was repeated several times during the evening, as were other parts of the day. Also, I liked my timing in that I switched on just as the two couples stood on the steps together, laughing and talking.
No alcohol for me, as I was on my own, but I opened a box of chocolates :-)

  12. Occasionally New Blogger chooses to bin one's comments and that is what happened to my first comment. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for this. Anyway, anyway... At last America has a president who is addressing COVID-19 as a priority instead of underplaying it or even ignoring it as if it was just an irritating house fly. Good luck to Mr Biden and Mrs Harris and God Bless America!

  13. It was a long time coming, wasn't it?
I'd say it was worth the wait but even yesterday's joyfulness could not compensate for the last four years. But here we are and we can begin to wake up from the nightmare.

  14. I hadn't seen that, about the soldier at Beau Biden's grave. Touching!

I haven't felt like celebrating anything political in a long, long time, and this was definitely cause for celebration. It seemed more real and solid than election night. And now we move forward! I feel like I can breathe again.

  17. Did you ever watch M*A*S*H? I get the feeling Frank Burns would be crying into his pillow this week.

  18. What strikes me as I read posts from people is that so many people just cried in relief. I'm a sap. It is comforting to know that I did not blub alone.

  19. Indeed, onward and upward. We also had a glass of wine to celebrate the new President. He will take the US on a more enlightened path than his predecessor.

  20. What a beautiful inauguration it was. It's nice to have a president who isn't surrounded by scandals of his own making. I did not see the soldier at Beau's grave. That's very moving and I will probably cry about it, as I cried many times during the ceremony.

    Love,
    Janie
