Life with boys

It's been five months since my girl Ginger went and left me as the lone woman in this house. Between her passing and the Covid restrictions on gatherings of friends, I find myself surrounded by males 24/7. This house is seriously low on female energy at the moment. But hey, I guess you could say I'm the Queen Bee!

The Marcoman "supervising" Gregg's  water change technique.

George looking sadly towards the door as Gregg was backing out of the driveway this morning, headed to work. George thinks we should all stay home as a pack, together, all day every day. He has no respect for the what it takes to earn a living! Speaking of which, here's a photo I emailed to the whole staff at work on Friday. My work-from-home office assistant helping himself to my coffee--and standing on my keyboard to do it. Talk about no respect!

With the exception of my husband,  the boys in this house are way more needy and troublesome than Ginger ever was. (Gregg's just a normal "husband" level of needy and troublesome! lol) Marco is naughty, but super cute and smart enough to charm you just when you're about ready to open a window and toss him out. Yesterday a wineglass slipped from my hand when I was washing it and shattered, dramatically, on the hard kitchen floor. Marco, who was perched on the countertop a foot away, stared, wide-eyed, for about 3 seconds and then said in a little doleful voice, "You bad bird." Even he rarely destroys something in so dramatic a fashion.

George is a total love these days, but he's so needy he's like an overgrown puppy. He depended on Ginger and probably loved her more than he loved us, and now we've had to step up and give him lots more attention. He's eating it up, and getting super spoiled. He's going to be a sad boy when I go back to work. Which, by the way, isn't happening for an extra week. He's going to have to suck it up and deal with it eventually, though.

One day we'll probably get a puppy or else a young dog as for a companion for George. We're still not ready in any way, but maybe by the end of this year. And it's going to be a little girl!

  1. 'You bad bird!' Now THAT made me laugh! The look on George's face speaks volumes. He loves his pack.

  3. Good to keep a bit of balance about- I highly approve of finding another dog-love to join your pack. Perhaps George will be more content if he has someone to care for, to watch over. Marco? Probably not.
    Oh well.

    1. Haha! Marco actually loves the dogs. He still calls for Ginger regularly and sweet talks George. The dogs don't return his affection, though. They dread his ear piercing shrieks and avoid him for the most part!

  4. You have such a sweet family about you. I agree George will be happy to have a companion. I know my cat would, but he's enough to care for.

    1. Yes, I think George would like having another dog around, but even if I were ready at this point (I'm not) we really can't afford it at the moment. Gregg is still out of a good chunk of income due to the pandemic and we're not looking to add any extra expenses for a while.

  5. I love your family! I can just hear Marco saying "Bad Bird!". You can tell in that picture that George really doesn't want his Daddy to leave. I love how our pets love us but it is hard on them when we have to leave even for a short time. I bet a little girl dog would fit in real good when you are ready!

    1. One reason I want another dog eventually is because I dread the thought of going out of town and leaving George here by himself. I never worried about it when he had Ginger here to keep him company. We probably won't be taking any trips without George until we have a new dog (not that we can do anything at the moment anyway, with the pandemic still raging).

  6. Yes, it's time to get a new puppy with a little pink tongue desperate to lick the nose of it's new Mom. This is how we move on.

    1. I've never had a young puppy (like 8 weeks old) so I think that will be what we look for when it's time to get another dog.

  7. I have just told O.K. about Marco‘s comment, and we had a good laugh - at the same time hoping nobody cut themselves on the broken glass.
It is a very good idea to have another companion for George eventually, and balancing the male/female parts in your family.

    1. I miss having another girl in the house...we were the queens! :) Plus Ginger was such an excellent dog that I can't help but feel like we need another female when the time comes!

  10. I don't know...I'd probably love a Marco around the house to stir things up!!

Of course, we have three cats and a dog who keep us on our toes. Not to mention Carlos!

  12. So, you're in a nearly estrogen free zone, eh? That can be changed. I broke a glass about 2 months ago and the first thing I thought about was the dogs' paws and, of course, they wanted to closely watch me cleaning up the sharp little shards of glass.

  13. "You BAD bird!" That's awesome! It's amazing to think what might be going on in that bird's brain. Animals are smarter than we given them credit for.

  14. Your Marco is a hoot! LOL! I have never thought about the male/female ratio in the house.

  15. Marco is such a character, drinking your coffee and saying You Bad Bird. Too cute! My family was like yours, lots of male energy with a hubby and two sons. Now my household is me and my boy Bounce, so still lots of guy energy.

    1. I love male energy, but Ginger was my partner in crime and we lorded our superior female-ness over the boys in the house! Plus I've never had such a smart, loyal, protective dog as Ginger so I'm determined that our next dog will be another girl.

    1. I can understand that! I typically enjoy being around men and boys more than other women....most of the time. But I sure miss my little girl.

  17. If you are feeling the absence of female company in your house may I suggest that you purchase two or three lifesize cardboard cutouts of famous women and place them at strategic points in your house. For example you could have Melania Trump, Marge Simpson and Queen Elizabeth II. Gregg may prefer to have Melania Trump in the bathroom.

  19. Marco's reaction was hilarious! Such a clever Boy! We're missing our Fur Baby who passed just after Thanksgiving and the Teen Grandchild we're raising wants a 'replacement Cat' but I just am so conflicted about that. We're getting to the age where we don't want long term commitment of Parenting anything Alive after having raised Two Generations of Kiddos and numerous Fur Babies over the Years. The Granddaughter is a mere 3 years away from Adulthood and she's the last one... so The Man and I are rather counting down having an Empty Nest finally. I do still have the Tropical Fish that the Grandson left his Sister to inherit when he grew up and moved out... but of coarse now they're basically mine since she immediately lost interest. At least they only require a Vacation Feeding Block if we were to go out of Town... and they are soothing to watch as I Blog.
