Neighborly

I've met our new neighbors! I forgot to mention it, but a week or so ago I walked over and introduced myself, a gift from a local bakery under my arm.

I had a hard time picking something out for complete strangers, but ended up settling for a strawberry pound cake. It didn't require refrigeration, and was likely to remain fresh for longer than something like a cookie assortment. In a perfect world, I'd have baked them something, but since plenty of people would hesitate to eat something prepared by a stranger (I might) I felt like a sealed bakery offering would be better for a first introduction.

The neighbors turned out to be a thoroughly lovely young couple named Bruce and Mary Catherine! They seemed genuinely touched that I stopped by to welcome them and were very friendly. Although they invited me in, I could see that they were still trying to get unpacked, so after a brief chat on the front porch I excused myself and left them to it. I couldn't be much more pleased. They're very young, have nice manners, and seem happy with their new house.

I hope they feel welcomed to the neighborhood, and I hope they liked the cake!

  1. That is so sweet! I'm glad you liked them. I remember moving into neighborhoods where I felt nothing but suspicion and also, moving into neighborhoods where people welcomed me with baked goods.
I know which ones made me feel as if I'd made the right choice and I bet that Bruce and Mary Catherine (what a sweet, old fashioned name...Catholic?) feel as if they have made the right choice.
    You are so thoughtful.

    1. Later last night, after writing this post, I went out to check the mail and there was a nice thank-you note for the cake in our box! How's that for a coincidence? :) It confirms my impression that they have nice manners.

Turns out it's Mary Katherine with a "K". I agree with you that it's a sweet, old fashioned name, but I have no idea if it's Catholic. It's possible, I suppose!

  2. That is thoughtful. I try to welcome new neighbors...and it's a dying tradition. It's already stressful enough moving and wondering what people will be like, so it's always nice to introduce, smile and say hi at least. I'm sure they'll enjoy that cake Jen.

    1. I'll never forget how when we moved in here, the jerk behind us harassed us from the get-go about our dogs barking and made a stressful time even more stressful and left a bad taste in our mouths. I've been determined to greet new neighbors with much more friendliness!

  4. so...you decided NOT to go with the eye patch and the parrot on your shoulder?

The strawberry cake was a lovely thing to do.

    1. I was able to tell them about the nice women on either side of us, the sweet elderly widow and the middle aged dog rescue/foster lady. Mostly people in this neighborhood are politely distant, keeping to themselves and minding their own business. It's a good place for quiet relaxation!

  6. That was such a wonderful and thoughtful thing for you to do! Such kind gestures to new neighbors were commonly done when I was young but unfortunately much has changed. Maybe your kindness will help to bring it back! Hey - you forgot to add Marco's name to the box!

    1. I got the most lovely thank you note in my mailbox last night from the couple! Yes, I left Marco's name off the box, but I did mention him to them in case they hear random screams and shrieks! They seemed quite amused to hear we have a parrot!

    1. Aww, I included just George because they're likely to see us out walking with him at all hours (I'm sure they already have). But I told them about Marco!

    1. Yes, I'd hesitate to eat something cooked by a total stranger. People are weird and you just never know.

  13. That's very nice and generous. Think how different your neighborhood experience would have been if your elderly, difficult neighbor had welcomed you in a positive way! How come Marco doesn't get a mention on the box?
