Oh, the pain.

Yorkshire Pudding's comment on my last post proved to be oddly prescient. He said, "Don't celebrate too much or you might pull a muscle! " Well, we didn't get much chance to do any celebrating because I've somehow pulled a muscle in my neck and this is a wholly new experience in muscle pain for me. This thing HURTS.

I have a pre-planned doctor's appointment tomorrow but I called this morning to ask if they could squeeze me in today. No good. I almost cried when they said they were too booked up to see me. Then I put out a group text to my book club friends, asking if anyone had a muscle relaxer they could give me. My pal Kathleen, who lives close by and is working from home, brought over two different muscle relaxer medicines for me to choose from---bless her! I've already taken one along with a large dose of Motrin so here's hoping I have a better afternoon (or at least fall asleep and get some rest). Sleep has been nearly impossible the last two nights. There's no comfortable way to position my head, and even swallowing hurts. Who knew that even swallowing spit flexes muscles in your neck?! Not me, that's for sure.

So the last couple of days off with my husband have been ruined. He's been so sweet, and so worried about me, and I feel so bad that a day trip we had planned isn't going to happen. And I know I'm no fun to be around at the moment.

This stinks.

I use naproxen (Advil) about 500 mg every 6 hours for the arthritis in my lower back. Works wonders, but don't turn it into a regular regime.

Hope your doctor gives you someithing that helps.

Bummer! The worst neck pain I ever had was whiplash. And it was just a mild case, thank goodness.

You've probably got a muscle in spasm, pressing on a nerve to boot. And it's probably not a huge coincidence that you have a very real pain in your neck right now. A chiropractor might be able to help too.

Oh you poor thing! I won’t ask how it happened... while you were celebrating 15 years of wedded bliss. But, if I were Yorkshire Pudding, I’d be hiding my head in shame. What power!

Break the spasm
Diazepam is best

I have a small TENS unit. What a blessing that is!

It definitely stinks. I usually use a heating pad for neck and back pains, along with muscle relaxers. Hope it's gone soon.

Love,
Janie

I went back to read your posts from earlier this month and you asked what you can do to keep yourself from crying. My daughter learned in a high school theater class that if you take slow deep breaths, you can't cry. It works, but I'm not able to speak while I do it.

I hope you recover soon.

Oh I'm so sorry you are in pain. I understand neck pain as I've had whiplash. A muscle relaxant along with naproxen should help. If it doesn't improve physical therapy might help. I hope you feel better soon!

I've been mainly using Motrin but a nurse friend recommended I try a mix of Motrin and Tylenol. Nothing seems to help much.

I'm going to insist on some real pain relief. I can't go on this way!

Jennifer said...

I've never had whiplash but thus has to be similar. The pain is so debilitating.

Not being able to get comfortable enough to sleep much has made it all so much worse. Thank goodness I already had a doctor's appointment tomorrow for a refill on an antidepressant.

I'm not sure how it happened. Sadly, it wasn't from doing anything fun. (Poor Gregg!)@

I wish I had some to try! I'd try almost anything st this point.

I had to Google TENS units. Do they work well?

Jennifer said...

Janie, thank you. I will remember the crying tip.

Me too. Me too.

If I can tough it out until tomorrow afternoon maybe my doctor can help me.

Hope the doctor helps you tomorrow. Heating pad or ice packs always seem to help me...
I would be afraid to take someone else's prescription medication, tho.
Feel better soon!

Oh my gosh I hope your neck pain subsides soon. I can handle back pain, lower body aches, and the like.. but a serious neck pain like that would have me wailing like a baby.

Neck pain is so annoying; I know because I occasionally suffer. I hope you can get some relief. Time, usually, is the best healer.

Here's hoping that you get some relief soon. You should charge your doctor's bill to Mr Pudding! ( do you have to pay?..not sure how it works in USA)

Every so often I pull a muscle in my back - under the shoulder blade. It's such a small tweak and yet so debilitating - and yes it makes me grumpy too; I fell so helpless I turn slowly like a robot on low charge. Thankfully, it gets better pretty quick.

YP obviously practiced some Yorkshire brand of voodoo and put a hex on you. It's such a drag to have that happen and not even know what caused it! I hope it's feeling better by now. The day trip can still happen eventually.

As to the trip, we've actually been thinking of going somewhere in the fall for a few days since I'll have a week off in early October. We'll see. I just hate that our few days at home together were basically ruined. Gregg doesn't get a whole lot of time off work. :(

We do indeed have to pay, Frances. Even though I have insurance it will still cost me a copay for the doctor and whatever prescriptions she gives me.

Jennifer said...

The worst part of this is how uncomfortable it is to swallow and also how tough it is to sleep!

Jennifer said...

The doctor simply must give me something for the pain! I can't take much more of it!

Jennifer said...

I want to wail like a baby! Waaaaah!

Jennifer said...

Normally I would never take someone else's prescriptions, but muscle relaxers are fairly harmless and I was desperate. :)

I hope by the time you read this you have seen your doctor and been given the right prescription or treatment. That pain sounds nightmarish. Be well my friend.

Oh the pain - indeed !

Sudden neck pain can be excruciating, as I've discovered a few times. I can only say that in my experience it will settle down again in a few days.

One of the worst things about muscle problems in your neck is driving a car. It is surprising how flexible your neck needs to be to drive safely - so many small movements. If only you had listened to my advice in the first place Jennifer - you would be okay now!
