Omicron

I woke up about 3am this morning sneezing, coughing, and with a runny nose and mildly sore throat. It might be my typical allergies, or a mild cold, but with Covid cases surging around here and our school overrun with the Omicron variant, I decided it was best to stay home today and get tested. I've been very careful. I've even taken to wearing an N-95 mask at work, that's how bad our numbers are, but even so I have contact with lots of people in the course of a day and over a third of the staff (and lots of students) are out sick.

I tested negative. Luckily our district is partnering with a local pharmacy that does rapid testing for us for free and I was able to get my answer in 10 minutes this morning. Now I can go to work tomorrow confident that I just have a regular cold, or allergies, or whatever, and I won't be risking spreading the evil virus.

God, I hate Covid. Hate it. I have no idea who they found to fill in for me at work today; two other office people are out and our classroom assistants are all covering classrooms where teachers are absent. I felt guilty staying home, but I know it was the right thing to do.

  1. This whole Covid thing has been horrible. We have the same problem at our school. Cases are surging. Just today three teachers got it, yesterday it was two teachers. And scores of kids everyday. I go into school everyday with an attitude that I will probably end up getting it, but I am still very, very careful. But how careful can one be in a middle school filled with kids? I hope you stay healthy. Take care.

    1. Are parents being crazy and sending kids with fevers and no masks to your school, too? Or calling to say their kid won't be coming to school today because they tested positive.......on a test they did FOUR DAYS AGO and were sending the kid to school every day while waiting on the results? It's infuriating, but there's nothing you can do. They need to go ahead and shut schools down for a couple of weeks (minimum) until this surge starts to abate, because people refuse to behave responsibly.

    2. Luckily, most kids do wear their masks properly. This new variant is just so contagious. Two of my sister's daughters got it (they are in their 20s) and they had their boosters!

  2. Covid makes me paranoid about interacting with people, going anywhere and having any sniffle or headache. Which I hate!

  3. Central PA is heavy with Covid, those vaxed and boosted have either no symptoms or relatively mild symptoms. The unvaxed? Lining up at the Emergency Room.

    1. I'm in Western PA! Like you, Jenn, I think the worst part of covid is that I've always been used to simply ignoring mild symptoms of ANYTHING and continuing on. You can't do that in the middle of a pandemic without endangering people around you. I feel like a big baby sometimes, even though I know that it is the right thing to do.

  4. I think I may be masking and social distancing for the rest of my life. And I'm kinda good with that.

  5. Things just keep getting crazier and weirder, don't they?
You made the right decision. Of course.

  6. Everyone is SO friggin' tired of Covid, but we must continue to take all precautions, as you have done. Glad it wasn't THE virus!

  7. I pride myself on not being sick in years with anything, even a cold. So let some idiots give it to me and they better look out!!!! I'm so glad I don't have to deal with a lot of this bullshit, because I have a temper and no filter, so my hat is off to people like yourself. Until this happened in our country, I knew there were some entitled dumbasses, but had no idea just how many.

    BEAM ME UP SCOTTIE!!!!!!!!!!

  8. We had a woman on one side of us who had it, and now we have a man on the other side with it. It does seem like only a matter of time before it finds us too.

  9. In spite of all of us being fully vaccined and boostered, my pub quiz team and I decided not to go to what would have been the first quiz in almost two years this past Tuesday night. We have waited for so long to return to it, we will just wait a little longer.
Yes, you did the right thing in staying home until you had your test results.
I have discussed me traveling to O.K.'s this weekend (trains and stations full of people!), but we have decided that I go ahead. Everyone is wearing masks, mine will be an FFP2 one, and for about a month now, regulations for public transport are that you need to prove you are fully vaccinated. So far, nobody has asked me for my certificate, but I know they check, and I feel a little safer for it.

  10. Definite smart and responsible of you to stay home. But so glad the test was negative. I said “This is exhausting” nearly a year ago. I don’t know what to call it now.

  12. Glad you don't have Covid. I am so glad I am retired and don't have to deal with the craziness of working in a school. Hang in there! You are doing the right thing!

  13. Like Ellen, I'm happy to be retired. Two nights ago I dreamed I had decided to return to teaching. In the dream, I was staring at my old classroom door trying to force myself to walk in. All around me in the hallway were children wearing masks. I had waves of relief upon waking up.

  17. Just about everyone is exhibiting those same Symptoms here too and literally it could be nothing or Omicron for all we know. So glad your Job has a Test Connection for the Rapid Results, they're extorting $200 a person here for Rapid Testing and the Free ones take 24-48 Hours allegedly to get results, it's way past 48 Hours and we still don't have our results... last time we Tested it took over a Week to obtain the Results... almost a complete waste of time with that much delay. Anyway, I do Hope you feel better, I got diagnosed with Pneumonia at the ER, but COVID people were literally swarming the ER's... and, the Docs couldn't conclusively say whether it was a COVID version of Pneumonia, Holy Hell, there's now a worse version of Pneumonia, Splendid! The ER's were out of Tests so just suggested you try to Score one elsewhere... which proved to be more difficult than I Imagined... took us over a Week to find a Test site that still had Tests. So, no wonder they're charging so much for the more desirable quick Tests... supply being way lower than demand.
