Earache

For at least a week now I've been dealing with pain in my right ear. I haven't had an earache since I was a child, and it's been awful. This morning I woke up and knew I had to go do something about it.

My regular doctor couldn't see me for a couple of days, and urgent care costs a fortune, so I decided to give my allergist's office a call. The nurse said that Dr. Stone would be happy to look at it whenever I came in for my weekly allergy shot. So I called off work today and went up there right before lunchtime, and the doctor saw me right away--no waiting! What a treasure he's turned out to be!

Apparently, I have an infection in the outer ear canal, and he saw the cause of it, too. I've developed eczema inside that ear! I didn't know that was possible. I've also been having a terrible eczema flare on my ankles, and Dr. Stone looked at that and decided that there's an infection setting in there, too. I'm getting antibiotic ear drops and an oral antibiotic, too. Well, maybe. The pharmacy called and the ear drops are out of stock and won't be in until APRIL. Of course, I can't wait that long. My ear hurts really bad. So I called the doctor's office and left a message that I need some alternative prescribed. I'm still waiting to hear back.

I've been in bed most of the day. I feel awful and my ear is worse than ever. I sure hope I can get something tonight. I don't think I can bear to go back to work tomorrow if I've still got such bad ear pain.

Have you ever had an ear infection as an adult?

  1. Thankfully no, ear aches are not my thing. That’s so great that the other doctor could see you! It’s usually a two to three week wait here.

  2. I actually dread getting an ear ache, our flooring desk is at a bad location, lots of gusty drafts when the doors open. Hope things get better.

  3. SO sorry. I've had pain in my ear from another infection but not an ear infection specifically. I hope it stays that way. They're awful. And I hope you feel better quickly.

  4. Yes, I had an ear infection a few years ago. The nurses in the health center where I used to work prescribed the wrong treatment, so it took a while to get over it. I'm fortunate, though, because it was only the second ear infection I've ever had. The first one was about 40 years ago! As an eczema sufferer, I feel your pain. I've never had eczema in my ear, though. My ankles have been bad for a couple of months now. I hope your doctor can get a quick alternative treatment for you.

    Love,
    Janie

  5. I was never prone to ear infections as a child. But then about 10-12 years ago, I had one as an adult. I had to take both ear drops and oral antibiotics to clear it up. I've been fine since but not long afterwards (within 6 months of the infection), I did develop periodic vertigo (luckily, mild). I've always wondered whether there was a connection.

  6. I had an ear infection in the first weeks of lock down three years ago and could not get a GP to see me so eventually sought help from a private doctor. He prescribed antibiotic ear drops which were not available from first pharmacy I visited, a leading one here who said they never stock them because they were too expensive. I then had to drive to the one and only pharmacy in the area which stocked them. By this time I was in distress, it was late at night, dark and raining. Horrible experience. I am also suffering from eczema at the moment which I have not had since I was a child which I assume to be caused by stress. I hope you soon get the correct antibiotics for your ear. x

  7. That sounds painful, and I had never heard of eczema in the ear canal. The older I get the more new conditions I hear about. Can you call around to different pharmacies? I hope by the time you read this you have your ear drops.

  8. No I haven't had an ear infection as an adult Jennifer. I hope you can begin to attack the problem with medication very soon. I wish I could think of something funny to say at this juncture but nothing springs to mind.

  9. I was prone to ear infections both as a child and as a young adult. I believe I was about 35 when I had my next to last ear infection and 45 for the last. I needed antibiotics to clear them. They were awful, horrid, painful things. I wonder how I survived them. I hope your doctor gets back to you and gets you so relief.

  10. Update: I have antibiotic ear drops, finally. I just started using them tonight so hopefully soon I'll have some relief. It's been an awful day! Thanks for all the words of support.

  11. Oh, dear! I haven't but my boyfriend has and it was miserable. First he got $190 ear drops which didn't work, then saw an ENT who told him it was actually a fungal infection. It's finally getting better. No pain but still a little blocked. Hope yours clears up fast!

  12. Poor you! I've not had an ear infection in as long as I can remember, but I know my sister had one as a child, and she really suffered.
Good to read your update, that you have the drops now and started using them. Anything so near the brain is extra painful, it seems, whether it is teeth, eyes or ears.
    Get well soon!

  14. I haven't had one but Dave gets them occasionally, especially when he's had or is getting a cold. And interestingly, he ALSO has eczema in his ear.

  15. I don't get ear infections as such, but I do get a lot of pain. My left jaw joint is badly arthritic, grown out of shape, and presses against the ear canal where it shouldn't. It feels like someone has insterted a knobbly chicken leg bone and then turned it, so the jaw never opens smoothly. As Tom says, pain in the head is hard to ignore, despite living on constant painkillers. However, I am not ill, and infections are dangerous. I hope you get yours under control asap.

  16. I'm prone to infections in my left ear due to a childhood operation to remove an orange seed (long story). When the ear began once again bothering me in February, to the point I could not turn my head without pain, I contacted my doctor's office. The soonest she can see me is in APRIL!! You are so lucky to have doctors you can just call and get right in. In the meantime, as I await MY doctor's appointment, it's been so long a wait that the infection seems to have cleared itself.

  17. My oldest daughter has excema in her ears. I'd never heard of it before, either, so I will be much interested to hear what you're taking and if it helps. I haven't had an earache in a long time, but the one thing that I notice is that when my ear aches, my jaw aches.

  18. You poor thing. Any pain in the head is the worst- you can't disassociate from it. I really hope that the antibiotics get to work quickly and that the ear drops finish it off for you.
