It was seed starting day here at Casa de Sparrow!
I'm off work next week (yay!) for February intercession, so I'll be planting lettuce (and maybe radishes) outside. Those can handle the cold weather we still have coming. Hopefully the tomato and pepper seeds I started today will be ready to plant out in mid April or shortly thereafter, which is our usual last frost date.
Seed starting day is when I truly feel like spring is on the way. It's so exciting, waiting for the first tiny green sprouts to appear. The joy of planning and planting a garden never seems to get old for me.

ReplyDeleteI wish you'd been around year before last to help me eat all the radishes I ended up with! We had tons. I like them, but there were way too many.
DeleteMy late mother-in-law (a joy) loved radish sandwiches ... of course on white bread. A major treat in her opinion.

ReplyDeleteI‘ve never had a garden of my own but can see how it made a difference to my parents‘ lives when they had their allotment, and my sister who has been sharing one with her neighbours for a couple of years now.
Even small pots of windowsill herbs can be fun to grow and useful! And I love fresh vegetables and fruit in the summer. Last week I did the first early spring fertilizing of the blueberry bushes. I'm hoping for good crops of berries (and figs from our young fig tree) in the future.
DeleteToo early to plant seeds here, but we have garlic outside doing us proud! My favourite tomatoes are Alicante and I grow them every year.

DeleteI remember once when I lived in Tallahassee and was planting my spring garden, the little boy from next door watched me for awhile and then he said, "Mary, why do you plant all these things?" I thought about it for a second and then I said, "Because I have to, Robert. I just have to."
ReplyDeleteI heard an interview recently where a man was talking about the origins of religion and it all boiled down to observing the earth and skies as related to the growth of the plants and the movement of the animals they depended on for life. I believe that. Thank you for helping my spring feel so exciting this year.

DeleteI love that you're planting borage! We get that growing wild occasionally in our garden, but weirdly, when I try to plant it, it never seems to do as well. I'm letting nature take care of that from now on.
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to try it! I'd like to get it established in the bed in front of the porch, where I hope to eventually plant other herbs and roses. There's already a big bush of rosemary and some bee balm there.

ReplyDeleteI once had the enthusiasm for gardening that you have now but over the years that enthusiasm has waned somewhat. However, I have bought some seeds and will go again when the time feels right.
