Solstice Great Conjunction

That's a terrible photo of last night's Great Conjunction between Jupiter and Saturn. It was taken with my cell phone camera in "night mode" which is why the color is kind of weird. Sigh. One day I hope to be able to afford a nice camera capable of taking these kinds of shots. Still, I wanted a picture to remember the event by. People have called the conjunction a "Christmas Star" which seems kind of silly to me. It's obviously two planets that appear kind of close together and not a single bright star at all. For my money, sparkling Sirius rising in the East is prettier and much more deserving of the name.

Whenever the sky is clear we enjoy looking up at all the stars when we're out walking at night. We made sure to go out early enough last night to see the conjunction and then took a second walk later, around 9pm. As often happens, we encountered a deer standing in someone's front yard. We always stop and look at each other for a few minutes, then continue on our respective ways. Seeing one on the solstice night seemed extra special!

Three days left until Christmas...

  1. Did you see three wise men from Marion riding along Highway 76 on camels?

    1. More likely to be three drunks on mopeds (the official transportation of people who lose their license due to DUI) if they're coming from Marion on hwy 76!

  2. You know, I read about the conjunction but it didn't even occur to me to try to see it. We can't really see stars here in the best of times -- too much light -- and it's been cloudy so I bet we'd have been out of luck anyhow.

  3. I looked for it last night, but it was too overcast. Or there were houses in the way. Or something. Anyway, I'm glad you took this picture and shared it.

  4. nothing to see here, as it has been cloudy for the past 2 days. oh well, in 800 more years...

  5. Being about 90 miles north west Anne Marie, we had clouds also, and I agree with you on the star stuff. "A Conjunction of Planets," sounds so much more notable.

  6. I like this picture, thank you for sharing it. I tried to see it last night but no luck. I think there is too much light in our neighborhood.

  9. Well at least you have a photo, too many clouds and we had record rainfall.

  10. I think you were lucky to get a glimpse. We have had cloud cover for days. Dark skies to you.

  12. The last few evenings here saw completely overcast skies and some rain, so no chance for me to see the great conjunction, much as I would have liked to.
You are right, it is rather silly to call it a Christmas star. At school we were told that it was most likely Halley's comet that made the astronomers to go on their long trip to Bethlehem.

The picture may not be very clear, but it does record this special event. I so love the idea of you and Gregg walking with George at night and meeting the deer!

  13. I had plans to be out on the terrace with the scope and the camera. I forgot! I'm glad you got a personal photo to remember the occasion.

  14. I did see the Great Conjunction (north of you by a couple of states) about half an hour after sunset. Didn't take a photo, but did drag out my binoculars.

DH and our dog, Sammy, had an encounter with a neighborhood deer last night, too, but in our driveway. DH didn't see it at first but Sammy began skittering back and forth on the leash play-bowing (didn't bark) and then DH heard the deer's hoofs on the driveway trying to get purchase and figure out which way to go. Deer finally bounded off leaving Sammy disappointed that he didn't get to play with the "very big doggy." :)

  15. You're lucky. It was too cloudy to see anything here!

We occasionally get a deer wandering round here but I haven't seen one for a long time.

  16. You got a good photo of it! I think I caught a peek between the tree branches but I am not sure. I would think, "oh there it is" but then it would be another plane flying in to O'Hare airport (near Chicago, IL).
    Thanks for sharing it!
