This is why

When I talk about my garden, people are always surprised at how many tomatoes and peppers I plant. This year I ended up with 14 tomatoes and 15 peppers (cayenne, jalapeño, and sweet banana). I realize that's a lot for two people!

Once again, it's been a hard summer to try to grow a garden. Weeks upon weeks of unrelenting heat and humidity, long stretches of no rain followed by too much rain all at once, and the ever-present insect pests have severely impacted productivity. Despite all that, though, here are pictures of what I've harvested in the past three days:

It pays to have extra plants to make up for the inevitable losses!

  1. I agree, much better to have too much than not enough

  2. We've had way too much rain and too little sun, which has had a terrible effect. Cloudy days aren't meant for growing gardens.

  3. Your produce is beautiful. Sweet Cheeks and I can go through a lot of tomatoes by ourselves.

    Love,

  4. That is quite a haul in the face of the weather we've suffered all over the country.

  5. I never grew as many as you, but always managed to bottle plenty to see us through the Winter. I still have a few bottles from 3 years ago.

  6. One of the tomatoes in the first picture looks like a baboon's butt! Is that the variety?

  7. Especially the 2nd picture with the yellows and oranges is appetizing!
My sister has yet to get back into gardening; she shares an allotment with a couple of neighbours and they have been looking after it while she was in Yorkshire with me.

  8. Your tomatoes look wonderful. This year someone (yes, you gopher) cut off all 3 of my tomato plants at the stem right near the roots. So all plants are large and then dead, so frustrating.

  9. Our garden has been ridiculous this year. The only thing we've really been able to grow is beans since summer began.

  10. We have a LOT of green tomatoes. So far, I dug some early potatoes and I picked five jalapenos, 2 zucchini, and a handful of peas and beans. My fingers are still crossed.

  11. Oh I am mad-jealous! There can never be too many homegrown toms!
